ED.... In this "1st game" we want to focus on....

Hi

I am currently under the impression that ED will be a game to last a long time, and will last a good many years, with future DLC to enrich the universe.

I paid extra to get all of the DLC (one thing I hate is continually having to buy extra content, when I buy a game I want to buy a full game not episodic content)

However in the background at work today i am going through all the previous dev diaries etc as i missed some, and have noticed a number of responses to questions about certain things, and the answer may be along the lines of

"No... In this "1st game" we want to focus on.............."

Now I am hoping that is just a figure of speech and they just mean that the launch game will be limited to something but that future DLC may add this later.

however, has there been any discussion in either hte alpha forum or DDF, that there will be sequels or spinoffs to the game which will be separate from Elite dangerous? I really hope not personally.

This is 1 example to prove i am not mental but it was said on a number of vids.

I would think that there would have to be at least some spin offs or additions of some sort which were sat outside the initial description of expansions. The reason I believe this to be so, is that if everyone goes for the extra one-off payment to get DLC, then that will effectively mean no more money will be forthcoming to FD and so no more budget with which to develop complex extra content. Of course FD are not committed to constantly adding masses of content for no extra money, and that initial payment from players is presumably intended to cover DLC costs, but it seems to me that additional charges would have to be the case if we expect them to be still adding extensive stuff in five years' time.

This is from the store on the Expansion Pass (emphasis added):

We intend to continue expanding the game with both new content and new features such as planetary landings and ship boarding. The Expansion Pass includes automatic access to all major Elite: Dangerous expansion packs.

My reading is there will be 'minor' expansion packs, such as decals or whatever, which should give an income stream to F: D. Of course the Expansion Pass itself might be pulled at some point, so latecomers will have to get each Expansion they wish.

Once the game is released, it is likely that there will be many, many more buyers of the game, that are at this point unaware that Elite Dangerous even exists.

Games like World of Warcraft and Eve Online have never had a sequel or spin off.

Maybe it will happen eventually - but assuming the game sells well after release, there is no reason to expect a sequel.

This is why I was thinking that some clever in-game advertising could be incorporated. So, when you dock and/or walk around stations etc, the walls have adverts. It would be very unrealistic if they didn't. I know people don't want current adverts, but if it keeps FD motivated to keep ED up to date and flourishing, then I think the pros massively exceed the cons.

Also, I don't play subscription games, as I don't have the time to play them enough to make the monthly fees worthwhile. I'd end up feeling obliged to log on, which would take something away from the fun.

Not really, people don't know about ED out our mini club, and they haven't bought expansions. So FD expect much larger sales of initial game and expansions.

Also MT.

When the game is initially launched there will be certain limitations. We will not be able to land on planets nor will be be able to get out our ships and move around. The ability to do those things will be made available in the first expansions packs. We will also initially be limited as to how far in the galaxy we can travel if I understood David correctly.

David believes that there won't be a sequel, ED will just keep getting richer and richer.

Unless I imagined it David stated in one of the dev diaries that the intention is that Frontier would not be making a direct sequel to this game for at least 10 years  and it would be enhanced with new content as and when development allows.

Now, if there should be a spin-off/sequel/prequel, I do not expect that it would/should be given to us free (for those who have paid for the Expansion Pass etc).

I would consider those separate and discrete from Elite Dangerous, and would have no problems paying to buy those if I thought I would enjoy them too.

I would only consider direct expansions to Elite Dangerous such as the EVA and planet landings as part of those we have paid for, and any future new cool features introduced into the universe in Elite Dangerous, to be included in this category.

This is why they are having an in game shop (micro transactions)
A constant cash flow after the game is out.

Where is this from?
My understanding is that certain regions would be blocked for later stuff, rather than an arbitrary travel limit.
I know there will be a soft cap on travel distance based on mechanical breakdown, but this is the first I've heard of an enforced ring-fence.

Because there's none, you are right, traveling will be only limited by how far ships can go without returning to space stations, and certain sections of galaxy will be blocked off.

3.2M for 43K backers is 50 pounds per person so lots of people without the expansion.

I figure most people will find they have to have the expansions - who wouldn't want to land on a plant or walk around.

100K seats = 7 million -1 million seats = 70 million - 10 million 700 million.

The intriguing question is where the sweet spot is. The key for me is what FD do to make this appear not just a space game. If the addons can make it seem more than just a space game and thus move it from niche/nostalgia to main stream the sky might be the limit
