ED: Joystick Issues...

I use a T.16000M, Thrustmaster joystick coupled with a TWCS Thrustmaster throttle with ED.

I have issues with the joystick 1) not holding calibration and 2) not returning to center.

At first I figured it was a mechanical or electrical issue with the stick itself. I tested it with IL-2 Sturmovick, IL-2 Stalingrad, X-Plane 11.31, Rise of Flight and about 5 different planes in DCS. No problems with any of them. They hold calibration and return to center (takes about a second for the light to go out).

Not SO with ED. After about 1/2 hour or so there is a noticable drift in flight, especially in the pitch. Sometimes the joystick light that shows not centered never goes out and if it does it can take multiple seconds and then only if you fiddle with it. I've lubed the ball up on the stick using dampening grease which was recommended on this forum (in an unrelated thread) with no joy. ED still won't hold cal. (made a difference in mechanical feel though)

Unplugging the joystick while in main menu, waiting 30 seconds to a minute gets cal back and it will work again in game for another 30 minutes or so.

I've tried setting dead zones. No go. they have to be huge to make the issue go away but then your ship becomes uncontrollable because the controls instantly go from 0 to some way higher value when the stick leaves the dead zone.

Any ideas what could be causing this? Only happens with ED. Any ideas how to fix it (not messing with TM Target to set custom response curves - been there done that - ED doesn't like it - sees it as a whole other HOTAS and doesn't recognize the seperate throttle and stick - I could be doing something wrong of course).

Not a game killer but annoying as h.ell.

IDEAS?

ASIDE:
This stick has had this problem with ED since the 1st day I bought it about a year ago when my Saitek X-52 went to joystick heaven. At first I didn't notice it - just corrected for it - but for what ever reason (I don't know why) the issue is just getting more and more annoying and since the issue doesn't exist with any other program I have to believe the root cause is ED. If not so be it. If so - then thanks for any ideas to resolve it that can be passed my way.

Sorry if this sound blunt, but I do own this stick and from time to time I need to recalibrate it under Windows. Did you try to do this properly?
Give it 2,3 gos until you made the perfect circle in the calibration process. For me it always solves the issue and it does not happen very often.

I've owned 3 of these. After a while, they tend to develop more and more "drift". The stick gets loose and doesn't return to center. Recalibration helps. Opening up the dead-zone helps. But not forever.

It's a physical thing with the stick. It wears out the ball-n-socket mechanism. It eventually ends up with so much slop I throw it out and get another, all while vowing to get ( or build ) a better stick. But then I see how much a GOOD stick is, with a throttle, and I buy another 16000.

I used a t16000 for my first year in elite, before I switched to a warthog (still together with a twcs).
Still use it as a secondary stick, for my secondary account.
Never had any issues, never calibrated it even once. But then I have a pretty old one, I've read somewhere that the old ones where better, in regard to precission/durability.
My suggestion: Check the thrustmaster device analyzer, this tool can tell you the output of your stick, which is your input to elite. Should allow you to locate your problem.

P.s. TARGET script is awsome, been using it for years without issues

Thanks but...
Been there done that. Fixes the issue for about 30 minutes into ED.

It's a cheap stick. I suggest you replace it with the VKB Gladiator Mk2:

https://store.x-plane.org/Gladiator-MK-II_p_595.html

Very accurate due to the HAL sensors and MUCH higher quality than the T.16000

That's a good idea and I've been doing it off and on since it became available. For me though it's a no go. Not enough hats or buttons and I don't think there's a throttle to go with it (except the one on the stick - nope - not going there) - (whole point of a HOTAS is to rarely if ever have to touch the keyboard).

Warthog would be great but I'm not gonna pay $450 to play a game. CH looks cheap but it isn't. AND lots of people claim it's great.

Push comes to shove I may go and get another X-52 - my last one lasted over 3 years and was made by Saitek. One wonders if the newer ones are as bad as people say they are?

So....

Thanks for the responses guys - gave me something to think about.

I also justt switched to this joystick after an X52 (which was great but dying slowly), an X56, I really tried to get on with but couldn't, and now the t.16000 with throttle. I too had horrendous drift issues as well as bizarrely buttons and directions would seem to 'hold' for a microsecond after I let them go. As a twitch gamer with a very fast monitor I am hyper sensitive to this. I nearly returned the thing as faulty. Then it suddenyl occured to me that it might just need larger deadzones...

Sure enough. I set unusually large deadzones in Elite controls, and all my issues went away. I don't feel a lack of response due tot he deadzones at all, I would suggest this joystick in default trim just has super sensitive centers.

I will also have a look at my windows calibration too, since others have mentioned it.
