ED Launcher Loading times

One of my gripes about of this game, is mostly just getting in to it. Lol

Before I begin, my PC is old, but not ancient.
It's got an AMD FX 8320, at stock speed, 8GB RAM, Gigabyte GA 970A UD3P motherboard.
But it also has an old AMD HD 6870 1GB, which despite its age (2010!), and signs of "imminent" failure, which its had for over a year now, still can run ED:H very well!
And then I have a fairly old, maybe 4-5 years, WD Caviar Blue 7200rpm 1TB HDD.

Now, windows 10 loads pretty quick, most of the time.
Steam also loads pretty quick.
Most things are pretty quick. (Chrome has stopped being quick).

Then I select to launch ED:H from steam.
And I'm waiting. Waiting. Waiting.
It can take up to 60 seconds just to bring up the blank white launcher window. Not even its contents.
Then, 10-20 seconds later the content loads, along with the play button.
I click that, and nothing. For maybe 20-30 seconds again. Then the game finally loads.

If I bring up the task manager, my PC is basically not doing much. Nothing is maxed out. It's just as if it's idling. If I load some other program up, that loads fine.

Does anyone else get this? And is there a fix for it?

My old laptop, which can no longer really run ED:H doesn't seem to have the same issues, but it does have a new 120Gb SSD.

I think the loading time of the launcher is mostly dependent on your internet connection speed and ping, not hardware.

I'd disagree with that - my rig is in my sig. It's plenty fast (and I play on a gigabit FTTH connection that works pretty much as sold), but I feel the OP's pain - the launcher likes to stop for take-away when it's clicked. It's very slow, particularly given that it's not actually loading game files until you tell it to.

I think that`s his point. It`s not the hardware, but the connection to the server. I have a pretty good system too.

Yes, that was my point - The trouble with neworking is that it's not always just YOUR side of things that influence the performance.

I play on two PCs - one good gaming rig and one very crappy laptop that barely manages the medium settings on 30FPS. on both of them the Launcher starts up with the same speed.

It's very inconsistent for me. Sometimes it's 30 seconds mostly loading my second account on steam but most times it's about 2 to 3 minutes on the regular on my main account. On extreme days it's taken up to 5 minutes plus at which point I tend to switch back to my steam account. I have no idea why but that account is almost always faster to load

McAffee by any chance?

Filthy! Lol

I use Bit Defender. Lol

That said, my laptop doesn't use anything. So maybe there in lies the issue after all.

Also, my internet is crap. Lol

But that doesn't really explain why the launcher takes so long to just pop up, does it? I get the contents and login loading slowly. But not the launcher itself.

7 Days To Die, and Guild Wars 2, and a host of other games, load their launchers almost instantly.

Haunted thread

This thread must be haunted or summat...

...cos ...

... It just happened to me.

Really weird, click on play and then wait forever for anything to happen then after it does start I decide to test and so save and quit - launcher sits there smugly with nowt happening, task manager shows no cpu usage, launcher greys out, then at last it reverts to giving the play options. I shut down the launcher and then I notice that EDLaunch.exe persists in the process list - so have to kill the process. Run again, no issues, launcher starts smooth, game start responds immediately to to clicking play, no issues at all.

So it looks like EDLaunch.exe process was getting confused / hung-up somehow - this on W7 pro 64-bit i7 6700k 16GB ram GTX1070 8GB.

Anyone else and is it worth a bug report?

Sorry to resurrect this and it probably won't help the OP but...

I started suffering from unexplained "unresponsiveness" from the EDLaunch.exe process, nothing I tried cleared it up, (running with no AV etc) so I raised a ticket and got this response....

"................ I did notice that your launcher is the previous build and not the most up-to-date version. It is my understanding that we've had to turn off version checking in the previous build of the launcher for some reason, and as a result, the launcher does not notify players about the new version. I do apologise for the inconvenience caused by this! Could you please download and install the latest version from the Elite Dangerous website, once installed, the version should read 0.4.5912.0 at the bottom of the launcher."

So far, the newly installed "latest" launcher is working faultlessly {touch wood} ....

My point is:

Why have they turned off version checking?

Why does this mess up the loading and unloading (launcher hanging-up) process?

Has this been announced anywhere? If not (I have not found it) - why not?

miffed and pleased - oh, no emojie for that ...

Well since yesterday I have some strange behaviour of my launcher, too. From my experience lots of launcher delays are network related.

I have not found out what is causing my trouble suddenly, but it affects launcher plus ED. Everything else is running fine. Well at least until I ran ED.

My launcher seemed totaly confused one time an sent me to purchase ED.

So am I alone with my sudden troubles or is something else going on?

AMD HD 6870 - older graphic card, slower compiling and readying of shaders.
'old' HD, can also be failing, thus loading badly.

Those are the two main failure points, just because windows itself loads fast doesn't mean there isn't something wrong.

Have you tried de-fragmenting your harddrive or at least checking to see if it needs it?

maybe run a chkdsk? because generally it sounds like a harddrive issue if your laptop on same connection doesn't have that problem.

Malc, I think you are invisible, again. :D

Yeah I must have annoyed a load of people and got stuck on their ignore list. Yay!

Well, if they can't be bothered reading what I write that's OK, I won't deny them the fun I had trying to track down why the EDLauncher.exe process would just sit unresponsive as the whim took it. (Many hours of my life that I can't get back again all because F D turned off version-checking and didn't bother telling anyone.)

Thanks, I'll have to try that on Monday. Rep!

I did notice my PC has actually started to go very very slow in the last 2-3 days.
Could be the old HDD on its way out, or once again, Windows Superfetch has taken a dislike to the rest of Windows.

I usually do a full destructive wipe of my system every year or so. But seems as my internet is horrendously slow, i haven't done one in ages. Lol

Tempted to steal the 120gb SSD out of my laptop, and throw in its old HDD again, seems as ED no longer runs very well on it. :D
Cannibalism!

Exactly. I can connect thru multiple different connections and the "speed"'of the connection makes all the difference in the world...err...galaxy. From start-up thru actual gameplay.

This suddenly started happening to me last week. The launcher used to pop up in like 3 seconds, now its like 3 minutes. Something is wrong.

Cheers for this, I posted to Support but didn't hear back. Will check my version at first chance [up]
