ED now unplayable in VR - 90% of the time

however every now and then it is flawless.

Hi

Has anyone else had this? I am not talking a bit of stutter, i mean totally unplayable as if i was using a gtx 660 all of a sudden.

i am not sure when this happened as i have not played in a while....... but it is since 3.0 for sure. all my other games seem to work fine and i have not changed anything.

i have tried updating to latest NV drivers but no joy. my gpu is running around 50% occupancy and cpu not breakiing a sweat.

Anyone any ideas?

cheers

I feel for you dear friend, though just to say nothing has changed for me on DK2 (I know) and on laptop 980m, still pulling 75 fps steady.

I have had an issue if I use the frame handling tech ASW?.. It totally knackers my flow of frames.

Best.

hmmm i will dig into my settings and see if i can turn it off.. Thanks for the idea.

typically after having all sorts of issues, before i posted i tried another VR app to make sure it was working fine and just an elite thing...... it was I then made the above post.

however then, firing up Elite again, it was smooth as butter.

I am certain however on logging in again tonight it will be broken again. :/ I suspect it is a problem with Elite somewhere rather than oculus i am just wondering how many others are having issues.... if anyone (I know there is a micro stutter problem some are having but i am taking maybe 30fps in VR (headtracking too ) and my gpu is not even close to at 100%

Unlikely solution... But what’s your current windows operation system mike ? As windows 7 is no longer supported in VR recently. I doubt your running this, but it’s ‘an’ suggestion type thing. :p

I had a similar problem but I put it down to networking. I was in a wing of three and when a fourth joined us I suddenly went all jerk-o-vision.

Do you play in open? Have you tried to see if the problem still happens in solo?

Hi Mike,
I've just switched from dk2 to cv1 and started to experience similar issues. I run the game via Oculus and find that when I load the game from the desktop prior to putting on the headset and I don't use Dash it seems to play fine for extended periods. But if I don the rift and start from within Oculus Home it will either start stuttering or most often play for a bit then go funny, especially if I try to use galactic map , or Oculus Dash to run or check another process. Only thing I can to is to completely quit ED AND Oculus, restart and try again.
I've search the forums and allocated cores as some suggest but it still happens.:(

I did an srv race last Saturday. At the start the performance broke down to 5 fps, it got so bad I couldn't even get to the main menu. Usually when I go to the main menu and log in again performance will be good for a few minutes and then slowly deteriorate.

If I'm alone on the planet surface it'll take much longer to become unplayable. Graphics settings don't really seem to matter.

I know where the stuttering was coming from with my Nvidia card in VR
But because I am moderated, I will not post any solutions.

Thanks all well if nothing else i am glad i am not alone (means more likely to be fixed)

i am on windows 10 64 btw with 16gb of ram and was in solo to rule out any networky things.

I've found frame rates tanking on my SSD, 1080Ti, 6700k @ 4.5Ghz and 16GB of DDR ram system since the release of 3.0 earlier this year. Frame rates in around stations are poor at times with ASW kicking in and out making the game a jerky mess, opening the station menu sees my frame rate plunge through the floor randomly. RE Sites are just not worth visiting anymore as ships jitter past your cockpit and using the SRV with friends is a frame rate death sentence.

My settings are conversative for my rig with SS only set to 1.3 and most of the of the other settings on high or medium with the usual suspects disabled, I used the same settings when I first got my 1080Ti but with SS @ 1.5 and was happy with the performance I got. Then 3.0 dropped and it all went down hill. I've lowered every setting and turned set SS to 1.0 for testing purposes and those same areas in the game have the same frame rate issues no matter what settings are used.

During the 3.0 beta I could switch back to the live version of the game and have great performance then switch back to the 3.0 beta and see my frames tank. I could do this at every stage of the beta, it was repeatable. During every stage of the beta I reported this issue, durring every stage of the beta the bug report was ignored and closed.

I've seen others raise the very same problem, I've seen the QA team each and every time reply with the same generic nonsence acting as if the problem has never been reported to them before (which it has been - many, many times), the stall of asking for logs which show nothing of any use and the same generic reply saying that the problem cannot be reproduced in house and the bug report closed. I even pressed the issue and asked if they were able to test using an older pre 3.0 version of the game and to then compare the frame rates to those in the current version. No reply was ever recieved and the bug report thread was once again closed.

Mike, I'm in the same position as yourself and do not play this game nearly half as much as I used to as in it's current form it's a mess. In my opinion FDEV have pretty much abandoned VR, the fact that the game shows on your headset is all that matters, how well it continues to run is not something they give two hoots about.

that is a sad story :(

the infuriating thing for me is it STILL works sometimes, therefore it isnt insurmountable. eventually i got it working for 10 mins before bed and it was perfect again...... i shall reproduce the same steps if it happens again (and also take Flimleys advice, thanks)

but it was jerky mess for me, then i had a 15 min dabble on The Blu, then elite worked perfect.

the last time the fix was run through the sensor calibration again, and after that it worked fine. (i am not doing that every time mind you).... i wonder if something is not turning on properly with elite, but if you run a vr app 1st it turns something on, then allowing Elite to run properly?

(seems a bit of an unlikely explanation in a poorly worded way, but i am a biologist so............. ;) )

have you checked the heat of your CPU/GPU?

on my last system (fx8350) the thermal paste got all hardened and stopped working.

to test i ran heavyload by jamsoftware and monitored temps with core temp, the system started to shutdown it was getting so hot.

i shall double check.. my gpu is almost 4 years old now so its a good shout... however i doubt it as i have been working it quite hard in other games without issue.

thanks

If ED is suddenly running poorly you have to health check your computer. Something is not right. Do you know what benchmark results your computer had when ot was running well? New nvidia drivers may not always be the best in your system.

I know my system how it performs ssd, cpu, memory and video wise.

Try to fault trace your system by comparing with similar systems benchmarks.

Regarding elite, sure you have the same settings since before?

When things start hitting the fans, try checking in-game temps and loads (cpu and gpu) on your secondary monitor (just tilt your Rift and have a look see) with a programme like HWinfo64: https://www.hwinfo.com/download.php

Do you have similar issues running from Steam instead of launching from Oculus? I've noticed ever since upgrading to a 1080 (in a graphics amplifier enclosure) that I have much smoother performance when I launch from Steam. If I launch from Oculus using either method, the game runs great for a bit, then I'll get a hard stutter where the display completely freezes for a second of two, then releases and everything is good. A bit later, it'll do it again but won't release. I've tried all manner of different drivers, graphics settings, etc., with no fix. However, no matter what graphics settings or drivers I use, it has always been stable when launching from Steam.

Mike are you in the UK? Sounds like you need to check temps, add some thermal paste to your CPU. Also check your drivers. I had the exact same issue, 90FPS flawless performance with pretty much everything on Ultra, suddenly FPS would get really bad (1080TI I7 7700K) Manually whacked up the fan on the GPU to max, added some thermal paste to the CPU, temps dropped, performance went back to normal.

If you are on Windows 10 perhaps that annoying game DVR feature has turned itself on? Doesn’t sound like it would be that but just a thought.
