ED on a Steam Link

My mate brought his round and I tried Elite - worked fine (gigabit wired here though) but couldn't get HOTAS to work plugged into the steamlink usb. Unsure if they are doing any work on controller support.

I haven't used a Steam Link, but I have used Steam In-home Streaming, which worked fine.

The HOTAS issue is probably due to to SteamOS not recognizing the stick. If it reports as a standard USB HID with four analogue axes and twelve buttons - like the HOTAS X, i believe- it should work fine.

Is anybody playing E: D using a Steam Controler and/or over Steam Link?

Playing feels a little bit lonely for me, sitting in the cellar office room. So I would like to reuse the old LCD TV with Steam Link and a Steam Controler to play E: D in the living part of the house. It would be fun for the kids to watch me exploring the solar system and the galaxy (they don't like the cellar).

Should I invest the 100$ ?

So long ago I made this post. I have since bought the steam link and it works beautifully. I do not play with the steam controller however. The steam link can replicate a USB to your PC, so I just plug in my Xbox controller. Realize you need to install a free 3rd party program to get that functionality, it won't work with an Xbox one controller by default.

That all being said, I still primarily play on xbox. 😀

Oh, one other thing, my house is wired, so I never had any trouble streaming.

Thanks for the positive answer. I think I will start with steam link (wired too) and keyboard + my joystick. If the joystick is working I am completely fine, but I expect it will not work, therefore the question regarding steam controller.

If you build an HTPC (or buy an Intel Compute Stick) instead of a Steam Link and put Steam on the Windows install that comes as standard, you'll be able to map most, if not all, of the buttons on the HOTAS to keystrokes using the profiler software. This will negate the need for a Steam controller.

Through Steam in-home streaming, you'll have the same functionality, but won't have to worry about joystick compatibility.

Hm, good idea. Ok, I will think about my options now. Best is I can test this solution before I buy a steam link, as I have everything at hand... Thanks for pointing me to this.

Yes I have used it via the steam link and I launch from the FD launcher, never used steam for Elite. You can plug in your hotas as well and it works fine. There's a free bit of software for this, I forget it's name though.
