ED on a Tablet (Surface Pro 2)

Just out of pure curiosity, I decided to see if ED would run on my Surface Pro 2 Tablet.

I had to set everything down to low to get smooth enough game play, but low and behold (pun intended) it actually played pretty well! The low graphics also aren't quite as noticeable on a 10" screen running at 1920x1080.

Here's a youtube vid of it; http://youtu.be/xNAaplwhh7U

I was using my X52 stick, but swap that for an xbox controller an you've got a pretty portable Elite: Dangerous, especially if FD can improve the FPS a little more in future builds :)

Nice to know. I got a Spro2 too :)
What FPS did you get on average? :)

I guess it would be cool for late evenings in the summer-residence, if I run out of scotch :D

Good to see. Makes me much less hesitent to stick the Alpha 1 on to my laptop to take around to friends and convince them to pre-order

In the asteroid field, and on full resolution demonstrated in the video, I am only averaging around 15fps, which is obviously border line unplayable (though as you can see in the video I didn't have any issues at all targeting and destroying canisters - but NPC ships are another matter entirely). On the missions in deep space with just a couple other NPC ships it jumps to around 25, depending on how many there are.

However, on slightly lower resolutions I was able to get a consistent 30fps in all current environments.

Not bad really, considering it's the first alpha build.

Yeah, I guess this would be doable for the final game, if you are trading between reasonably safe systems, for example. Cool!

Thanks for this :)

So you can see what combat is like, I uploaded another vid: http://youtu.be/T3_fDyUxv5s

This time I lowered the resolution slightly to get a small FPS bump, and left FRAPS running so you can see the FPS counter (top-right).

At the start of the fight where I also fly into an asteroid was totally on purpose! Plus, my aim is usually a little better when not leaning over a camera :p

Try running it in Incursion in Single player or getting up close and personal to the space station, the impeccable when the fur is flying in Multiplayer, it get's a bit much for mine then. I've been playing Alpha on mine for a few months now (only when I am away with work) I have an Xbox controller I use with mine.

Also helps if you fiddle with the Intel HD4400 power and performance settings if you only plan to play while plugged in. Force everything to high performance.

Also on mine setting the texture detail to the highest level tends to make the Surface crash out fairly quickly in any scenario. Your HD4400 shares the system memory with the O/S, unless you are lucky enough to own the 256GB / 8GB version then you are pushing it pretty close to its limits.

Hopefully when the optimization work is done later on it will become more playable in these more extreme scenarios.

That doesn't look half bad! I don't think I should ever be tempted or allowed to have a portable version of this though. Taking it to work for instance seems like a fundamentally bad idea. ;)

RDP session by any chance? :p

EDIT: Ah, it's in the video description after all. Lucky guess by me! Yay! :)

I made a thread ages ago asking if people had done this, and to see it working sort of on a phone is greatly amusing.

I do have the 256gb version, and haven't had it crash on me yet, but then I only have access to the sp version of ED, which obviously doesn't have anything as intensive as the station.

Nice to know that it is in some way playable though :)

I haven't fiddled with the tablet to improve it, I wanted to see how it would run with vanilla setup. Its handled every game I have thrown at so far, ED actually seems to have been it's biggest challenge!
