ED options/HMD?

In preparation for new Rift coming soon (ish) I had a look at all the ED graphics settings options expecting to see a menu item to enable HMD on/off or something like it. But after a good look cannot see anything to tell ED to run with HMD. My ED version is bought from the FD store and NOT steam. I have no wish to run ED through Steam so have not redeemed a partner key for it, I run off the launcher. Does ED detect the HMD or what?

Also.... currently ED is installed on my system drive C: which is SSD, is it best to simply install ALL VR related content and required Oculus files onto this SSD as well, and leave the 1TB HDD for other stuff? Any input is much appreciated here.

I use the pure Frontier installation myself, in combination with a rift. You will find specific HMD options, once it is connected.

After installing Oculus Home and connecting the HMD, you have to enter the Oculus Home settings and activate the option to accept third party VR applications.
Then launch Elite via the Frontier launcher as usual (still starts on the monitor) and go to the graphics settings. There you have to select "HMD and headphones" and relaunch the game.

Now you are in VR, can tweak your VR graphic settings and enjoy the game like never before. Make sure to increase either HMD quality or supersampling to 1.5 or above (but not both, unless you have 1080ti installed) in the graphic settings to sharpen image quality, before you make your quality settings like textures, shadows and such things. I hope this helps :)

Also, I think you need to go to Graphics -> 3D and set it to HMD Headphones (for headphone sound) or HMD speakers (for, umm, speakers). I currently run supersampling at x1.0 and HMD quality at X1.0 - on a GTX 1060 and with a blueish HUD everything looks fine and clear. Tried at HMD quality of x1.25 and x.150 and though they're better, they aren't worth the performance hit. For me, at least.

Thank you both for taking the time to help me on this the step through from Frank G seems pretty straightforward- excellent, Mahoon I too am running a GTX 1060 6GB and have previously used the blueish HUD color in 2D so that sounds a good tip to cut down on some of the orange glare effect. Looking forward to giving this a try sometime soon when kit arrive from Oculus.
