Just need to share my experience/excitement since my Eagle´s cockpit is the first thing I saw in Stereoscopic 3D in my entire life.
few details on my condition: I have been stereo-blind since the age of 4. Had lazy eye from measles in my eye at age 2 and after surgery never learned to combine both eyes properly (I´m 37 now btw). also my left eye is near sighted and my right eye far sighted...which incidentally worked out well for the last 15 years that I refuse to wear glasses or contacts since I just use one eye for close up stuff (e.g dashboard in car) and the other eye for looking into distance. this may sound strange to you normal people but I can switch my eyes at will. If I concentrate really hard I can get both eyes to show up and have double vision.
I always thought that my lack of stereo vision aids my enjoyment of computer games or 3D programs on a monitor since I can judge depth and distance on a monitor when others struggle (esp. obvious as I worked in 3D Architecture design for a few years). Also I´m quite good at painting or drawing, did never understand how people have problems drawing an object on a piece of paper since for me it all looks the same
Very curious about how the Oculus Rift will be like for me and encouraged by a few threads on that topic that basically said "how you see in RL you see in the Rift" I went ahead and ordered my Headset. First impression was very cool off course. The perfect head tracking is so convincing it gives you a 3D effect just by shifting your head left to right by a bit (as I subconsciously do in RL)
As I got the headset primarily for ED it´s the most played game for me on the Rift. In Beta 3 I struggled with bugs, framerate and settings and could not really enjoy gaming for long periods of time (allthou I did enjoy the messing about in my Ship in VR...).
Since Gamma started I had no technical issues anymore, persistence is working and I never in my life had a better feeling of presence in a game. The 8 hours I played ED last weekend are stored in my brain as real as if I was really doing something outdoors.. hope you know what I´m trying to say.
As 1.01 was released I thought that the black eye bug won´t impact me much since I primary use my left eye in ED anyways but boy was I wrong. It was the first time that I saw how much from my right eye gets overlapped...very fascinating stuff for me (all thou annoying not being able to play)
Then came yesterday and 1.02. I finally got into my eagle again (feels like coming back to the real thing from playing on a monitor the day before). Hanging around a Star fuel scooping for my way to SOL I relaxed my eyes, looked at my eagles console and BOOM. cannot explain what happened but the sensation I got from it was out of this (my) world!!!!
For the first time in my life the images fused together and I could see what I think was depth. (ether that or there was something very funny in my tea
Could repeat this a few times until I was too tired to go on, also I reached SOL.
I can´t wait getting in there tonight and investigate further. Also I will get contact lenses to level out sharpness between the eyes...sooo excited!
(Need to stop writing now before I use all my day at work for one exciting post in ED forum.)
Thank you Frontier! Your game and Oculus Rift just changed my life a bit.
