Modes ED should be Solo only

This would avoid all the balancing discussions. Pre-engineers Open was a viable route, because it kinda balanced PVP. However, now that ED is based on time, and how you engineer your ship, ED should be solo only. You can keep multi-crew, because it’s basically one ship.

This would help with game development too. They can focus more on story, AI, flight model, missions, etc.

down the road, when things are more polished, they can go multiplayer.

As someone that spends a lot of time in solo and sometimes open i have to say making it solo would be totally insane as wings and such is a major part of the game, i don't do wings but i appreciate that it's there for those that want that interaction and it effects my playstyle too and FD are wanting more players in open so you won't get what you want nor should you, got to say your viewpoint is rather out of touch for the game you're playing.

I am 100% sure that we will get a true separation of the open game and the solo game at one point.
Frontier has realized by now that they are in THE deadlock of every MMO game: grind, grind and more grind for the balance and equality!
Frontier fully understands this and we will get a true solo game.

But I do not understand why we should close the OPEN game. This makes no sense at all.
First of all the Open game makes money and it funnels away those players who like to confront other players in a rather hostile way.
Good for them. Keep it.

It is easy for me to agree, because I do not care about multiplayer whatsoever, but I am not the only one playing this game.
Many people seem to like multiplayer. Therefore I understand the reason why it is in the game.

There are definitely huge advantages to designing a spacesim that can exclude all multiplayer shenanigans.
I would be prepared to pay a hundred bucks extra, on top of what I already spent, for a separate single player, offline Elite Dangerous version.
I have no doubt it would turn out to be the better spacesim experience.

I am 100% sure that I disagree with you. It has been discussed again and again about "splitting" the game. If they were going to do that they would have kept the "offline" idea. You also have to look at the cost of things like new servers, keeping the same networking or changing it, having the manpower to handle two to three storylines, plus other resources needed. Where are they going to come up with that capital? Charge those who play in Open a monthly subscription? What about PGs? And if you split off solo then why not split of PG's and the even more resources there. Fdev came up with a pretty robust way of dealing with things. Yes there is griping and disagreements, but you will never get a utterly happy community. They have done a good job toeing the line so to speak, and while people like Sandro I feel rock the boat some.. that isn't Fdev in general.

I'm 100% sure that Frontier Developments PLC, being a publicly traded company that has an obligation to turn profit for its shareholders, do not want to double their infrastructure costs by running separate servers for the different modes.

This.

Frontier Developments considered (not promised) adding an offline mode during the Kickstarter, and for various reasons, including not wanting to maintain multiple code bases, decided they didn’t want to do that. It’s also the reason they stopped supporting the 32-bit clients, and now the Mac clients as well.

As I said above, I would’ve preferred a single-player game which doesn’t have to make the compromises a multi-player game does. That ship sailed back in 2012. And while I’m surprised to find I enjoy the unique (but not necessarily harder) challenges Open multi-player brings, I do mourn, at times, what a new single-player Elite game could’ve been. C’est la vie.

Many of the best single-player games are ones that have good NPC companions. I've not played Dragon Age, but I've read it's known for its unique companions, and I absolutely loved my companions (especially my dedicated sidekick) in Dragon's Dogma. I would happily trade in multiplayer wings and multicrew for a really good "humanized" NPC crew and wingmates. Sure, Frontier can add these someday, but as said above, there were compromises made to make this a multiplayer game, and there is no going back now.

Though I must confess that some of my favorite moments in ED came from the multiplayer experience...

Exactly this - and every player bought a game with three game modes.... :)

That is not the point, and you should have a better argument than buyers rights!

I don't play in Open nor do I play in Solo, I do PG, many players (that aren't me) bought the game to play with not just people they know but people that they don't know too, taking that way from them would see them leave the game, irrespective of their rights they would be disgruntled and likely not make further investments into FD products.

When the game comes to it's eventual end... hopefully not soon, I'd like the chance to run the game in offline mode from afresh, I realise that much if not all of the recent player based history would be lost, but I would not really be playing the game as envisioned, it would be more like playing an updated version of First Encounters with some bells and whistles.

Right now though, the game is enjoyed by players from different countries and platforms and different with playstyles.

Err, one can, if one so wishes, to play ED in only Solo mode.

And no, there would be balancing discussions if ED had been released as a sandboxed single player game.

I feel like I've been suckered into replying - I needed a break from my C++17 coding anyways! Yay for modules too!
