ED, the rift and sweetFX

You can use sweetFX in order to get a really sharp image quality in the rift and some custom benefits.
By sharpening the image i find that the result in the rift was really better in perception and immersion.
Select OFF for antialiasing in game then follow instructions:

Nvidia panel for the rift:
brightness: 32%
contrast: 0%
digital vibrance: 50%
Force anisotropic filtering in nvidia panel for Elite as it give a really nice boost to visual quality of textures
These settings are optional as for me it get rid if the black smear problems (trailing shadow when in very dark places), vibrance is now add with sweetfx
Best results will be with 1080p and in game supersampling on 1.5 (good hardware) > then custom res of 1440p on rift > and then native res of 1080p
Make sure to have your gamma slider in ED graphic option to default (usually middle position)
You need to download sweetfx https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B87rsi9bS3OdWmxNbVJPNjNQRjA/view?usp=sharing click download arrow
then extract it at c: user/ **username**/Appdata/ local/ Frontier_developments/ products/ FORCE-FDEV-D-xxxx/ (should be where elitedangerous32.exe is) OR simply locate the folder that contains the EliteDangerous32.exe ( can be in progamfiles x86) and extract files here
Then open SweetFX_settings file and replace content with the one bellow

When I install this all I get is black. The game's running - I can hear my controller doing stuff in the menu - but the Oculus screen shows nothing but black...

Can you just export your settings to a file?

EDIT: I used the sweetfx configurator and just manually put in your settings myself and I still got the black screen. Nevermind

I think the game must be in full screen mode in order to Work. Got the black screen with sweetfx on other games and that was fullscreen problems.
Il runing the game on win7 with only the rift other screen desactivated
 
I edited the first post, sweetFX version was wrong one and that might have cause the black screen problem. Try the new link and see if it work (downloaded too much different versions and messed up with the version to link for DL)
 
After trying it in Assetto Corsa and iRacing where it was a big benefit, I tried it in ED and didn't like it. I don't like the posterizing+outline effect those settings have. The settings I found for Assetto only apply sharpening and it's enough to give clarity without side effects. They didn't have any effect in ED because it's sharp already so I ended up removing it.

For those wondering what it does, here's a video with it applied to iRacing. As far as I'm aware it doesn't work with direct mode. Only extended.

That's why i changed some settings into the file in order to bring something better (using the contrast / brightness) in my personnal taste :p
I found the sharp effect was usefull for objects in mid distance like in station, in asteroids field or in proximity with ships. I found skybox and nebula being nicer.

No the problem was the stereo extra display...

and I am GLAD I solved it. Dude, wow, just wow. I didn't even know that there was blue dust across most of the sky. And the crispness is just outstanding. Everything is much much better with this, big rep to you.

I've tried many things to improve the quality of the image in my DK2 and this is by far the biggest improvement.

I'd just bought an EDTracker because I was a bit fed up of the Rift image quality.

Glad I'm not the only one going for this. I don't know why things should be this way. It's almost as if the DK2 was released with crappy software running it and this little config fixes it completely. This is how the rift is meant to be displayed. Solves the huge ghosting issues, the shimmering is gone and it seems like it does all this with zero performance hit.

This thread should be made sticky or at the very least you should rename it to something like “The Ultimate DK2 Graphics Fix”
 
Anyone get this working on Windows 8.1? I tried Sweet FX v1.5x and had no joy (edited the settings file to match the new version)

I'm using win8, don't know why it would be different.

a) you don't need to update the settings, just copy and paste the files from the Google doc and you're good to go (op should change his instructions)

b) are you using the stereo second window? Turn it off and it will work
