ED VR Launching

For the last couple of months I've launched ED directly through it's own launcher. I use the Steam platform, but don't fire it via the SteamVR. For some reason, in the last 3 days, that process is failing with the 'ED64 is taking a long time to launch' error message. The only way I can now launch is through SteamVR - which works every time.

Personally. I've not noticed a difference in performance between the two methods, but interested to hear if anyone else is finding this?

Odd things appear to be happening with steam and ED. I've got a Vive and Rift. I had installed the Vive but decided I needed a better GPU (recently installed) to really make VR worthwhile. For the last week or so, even though I was running the game on my monitor and the Vive wasn't plugged in, it (Elite) would start Steam VR for no reason meaning I had to close that down then switch back to Elite. There's a bug report about it from another commander.

Anyway I thought with the new GPU it was time I tried the Rift as well, installed that and now Elite doesn't open Steam VR, it just works as expected.

It might be a permission problem for you with Elite trying to start Steam VR but failing hence you running from steam starts Elite as VR is already started. Hard to say but I wouldn't be surprised if that opening Steam VR for no reason bug is related to yours. No idea why installing the Rift solved the issue for me though.

Yes this happens too to me. The reason for me was that ED somehow gets confused sometimes on startup that you are using VR headset, so when I see that meesage I just go to in-game graphic options (on normal monitor), make sure hmd is selected and press apply. Then everything resumes normally.

Thanks guys - I'll take another look tonight. I normally don't touch the settings in game - instead I use DrKaii's app, so it's possible that is not setting one of the properties quite correctly, or I've corrupted the profile.

So I am not alone.

Something recently changed where each time you launch Elite, it launches Oculus Home but the HMD option is off in Elite after each launch and you have to enable it manually each time to get the game to run in VR properly.

I haven't tested if Oculus Home's version of Elite does the same thing. I wonder if it is some sort of Push to use Oculus Home vs Steam for Oculus VR use, but it seems unnecessary if so.

^This. That's my conclusion too - the HMD setting is reset to 'Off' every time I launch. ED launches in 2D, from where you can change it back. Alternatively you can launch direct into VR using the SteamVR overlay.

I thought maybe it was something linked with Dr Kaii's app to writing correctly, but pretty sure it's not that.

I can't launch via Home atm. Tested the new Oculus audio mirroring (with the hope I could finally use the inbuid headphones and buttkicker) with the standard Elite Client and its the only Oculus game that it doesn't work with. Thought perhaps launching from the Home version of Elite might help but I can't login at all now!! Normal launcher works fine though.
