ED vs former Elite games Economic Simulation

Many here have realised that ED's economic simulation appears shallow. I'm not impressed. Prices vary within relatively narrow margins, Galactic average never changes (static table) etc ad nauseum.
Even cargo cannot be stored - you can't even change ship without emptying it.

My question is this:

Were the economic simulations in Elite, Elite Frontier, II etc better than what we see here?
Could you store trade goods in those games?

If they were better, is there any reason why their design cannot be implemented here? Why start over with a gimped system? Publisher? IP rights? Network architecture?
 
Previous games have static universe. No simulation whatsoever.

This one is mix of NPC trading and player trading. Price variation you see is built upon simulating huge number of NPCs trading. Scope might be limited for price not going too much highwire.
