ED with VR, how do you enter text ?

Hello,
As I'm very interested in ED's VR support, so I'm curious on how you commanders input text with your headset on ?
For example, when searching a system in galaxy map. :D
Would it be possible to use windows speech recognition ?
I gave it a quick try yesterday but it failed.

I used Vocals, and windows voice recognition is configured and functionnal.

Thanks for your help and ideas

Use a keyboard.

I hardly ever, if ever, type anything. If I want to go somewhere specific I will open the text entry dialog and take the rift off. It's not ideal but it's not really a big deal to pull yourself out for a moment to type. If you are doing it a lot I would recommend enabling the second screen so you can see what you are doing while out of the rift.

Yes, voice recognition, I have voice attack configured to type for me, it also has all the major systems/trade routes rare routes and a bunch of quick chat stuff.

Two keys on your keyboard have a little bump: these are F and J on a standard QWERTY keyboard. By feeling for the bumps, you will always know where your fingers are. Touch typing is an incredibly valuable skill. You may wish to learn it.

@Deimos-GOW and Kopachris : Thanks for your answers, though it's not what I expected. Taking of the headset just kills immersion into the game, and blind use of the keyboard is not very practical, considering one can have a Hotas (I do) which occupies a lot of room on the desk.

@777Driver : if I understand correctly, you have configured Voice Attack for it to type for you, but is it pre-recorded text you chose ? or is it live speech recognition, or at least letters enumeration ?

Thanks

Nickola

you can program voice attack to type and you can allso program it so you only need to say a system or station name while in galaxy map but all of this need's to be programed into voice attack by you
which takes a while , i have over 20 systems and 35 stations programed into it at the moment and i just add others as needed or when i have time .
it allso has rare's routs and stations pre'programed into it such as the zaonce run .

An optional local voice channel would be nice, would allow voice communication locally and solve this issue easily?

systems and a bunch of text is manually programed, about 2000 in total, I can also say letters numbers and it types it for me.

Yeah, that's true. My FLY 5 is so small I forgot about that. Maybe a small table to the side with the keyboard on it in the same location and orientation as in-game? If you have room next to you, that is.

I made my own desk mount for my X55. Keyboard sits right between the mounts, perfect fit. Some kind of voice recognition would be good though, or even an in game virtual keyboard like the steam big screen mode keyboard would be awesome...

@Deimos-GOW : this is the next stage for me, I'm working on a design for a pair of desk mounts for my Warthog ... considering the weight of the monster, I'll have to built something rock solid. Another possibility, is Chair mounting the Hotas.
The in-game virtual keyboard is appealing ^_^

Anyway, I've done some configuration in Vocals so I can enter the names of the systems I use most. It's working well, not how I'd have liked it to, but it works.
In fact, responding to a vocal command, it enters the name of the system and pushes "Enter". So i just have to click in a field and say the Command.

Now, I'll give VoiceAttack a try, cause entering a text in Vocals is a bit of a pain ... selecting letters one at a time again and again ...

How do you do that with VA? I cannot seem to get it to just type out what I'm saying instead.

I just tried Netflix for Gear VR. On-screen keyboard. Look at the letter and tap/press whatever firebutton. Works well enough. Frontier needs this for at least Galaxy map til commercial headset launch.

It doesn't just type what I'm saying.. I have programmed it to understand the alphabet, numbers, systems, common phrases and sentences I want typed in ED.

I've since seen that if you use the latest beta version of VA then there is a dictation command you can use. I've configured a command to activate the comms and dictation mode so that whatever I say is entered and sent. Works quite well.

Nice, I noticed that a little while back. Haven't had the time to investigate.

I use the keyboard for the Gal map.

I use DragonNS Home v12 for speech-to-text in the Comms window.

Edit: Just noticed the post above about VA having dictation these days. I haven't used VA in months (added extra buttons to my joysticks for faster actions instead) so this is news to me.... I will have to look into it. DNS is a resource hog and I'd love to move past it.
