ED wont get much competition from SC this year

If both games go the paths they are going as of now, they'll never be too much of a competition for each other. They'll be good games with overlapping playerbases with most players owning both.

Just like I don't know of a single person who played only one of quake or unreal, I think most people will prefer one over the other but own both.

Consider me that single person then. I have played every UT to death, never owned Quake.

I have the Alpha, it is pretty ordinary. Most of the content is utterly pointless too currently. Thus far, there is no "game" there, no cohesion at all. They might have lots locked behind RSI doors, but as it stands, I am skeptical.

Kristov: You do know know ED has multicrew coming this season?

Yes, I do, and I even mentioned that, SC multicrew ships don't function as well without multiple players crewing them, Elite they function fully solo, that's the socialization and team orientation that SC has and Elite doesn't. That's been brought up for SC, big ships that have multiple crew spots will function for a single player, but they won't function at full potential. You need crew members to get full potential from them, that's by design, so you can't run around solo in a Javelin and be as good as another Javelin with a crew in it, or a Freelancer or Constellation or Retaliator or pick your multicrew ship, SC is full of them, even the Hornet has a multicrew version for pity's sake. CIG is really pushing the social and teamwork aspects big time, they want large groups to play together, they designed the ships for that, the game relies on it for so many aspects of it's functioning. Elite, solo player oriented, multicrew ships are coming, as they were always promised, but my Anaconda doesn't need a crew to perform at her peak, she should, but she doesn't, and that's not going to change with multicrew, especially since I only use fixed weapons :)

...But Chris really needs to stop making any more promises right now. So no more birds, space pets or whatever...

He can't stop. Every single game he has ever produced followed this path, the difference is that in the past he had a publisher there to say 'Yeah that's great Chris but we need to get product to market and start selling it.' This time he is the publisher and he already has $108m of sales in the bank, does anybody really imagine that he's going to be reined in?.....

Agreed and seconded, both. This is my major worry around SC as well. The expectations have been allowed to creep too high for too long.

CR is clearly a very likeable and pursuasive chap, but his track record is anything but solid, and it could be argued that he doesn't show signs of learning from previous mistakes.

In general I see SC and ED and even NMS as all being complimentary products, and that they are (now) arriving in different years gives each the room to fit in, and pick up players who have played out the other games. There's also (hopefully) Limit Theory coming out at some point

Well, anyone knowing Chris track record in gaming industry this shouldn't really come as surprise. I think his answer was too arrogant... yes, games get delayed and canceled but none of those games cash in *before* being released - even preorders get their full money back. No such lack here if CIG folds (it won't happen, but in case).

However I think even guy with ego like him knows that this is his reputation and future well being on the line and Squadron 42 seems to be on track to be released, as SC finally got their engine basics in place last year. Huge number of players bet on CR because he promised more and sooner. Fact they don't hold ill against him at least openly indicates that he has some goodwill to burn trough.

I still can't find enough strength to care. For me SC as project has gone too long without delivery. You could finance at least 10 good games with that money already.

I hope it all works out and is a great game.

But I have to say 100 million dollars isn't that much to fund 300 employees over a multi year project. Works out about $100k salary per year over 3 years.

I once worked for a SW dev startup and thought the few million investment they had was a lot, but it went bust in 18 months and had about 10 staff.

SC current Alpha is quite ordinary just now, nothing too clever going on there at all
I do hope it will be a great game but right now I can not see that happening.
Overpriced, overhyped...

Must be due a new X-wing game btw :)
