So far when the engineer does an update in 2.1 we see no visual change to our crafts.
sensors, and stats tells us something, but the external view of the ship is fine.
But In 2.x we shall have multi-crew (multiple players in the same instance in the same ship, and avatars).
Which if my guestimations are correct and rubbing lucky charms pays off, will lead into the Season3 : Walkies!
So here is my thing.
Will we see the Engineers modifications from the inside, since they aren't apparent from the outside?
An open panel, with cables runnig out of it, that is steaming when that module is in use for example?

When we get move around our ship with our crew ....in a tiered drip-fed approach as usual for example npc and passenger interaction creeps in later on, (they are confined to quarters and must use internal comms until 3.x)
the damage model creeps in, module failures, and repair kit at hand, internal and external (patching up the ship from the outside was named once upon a time let's see if that holds out).
Ships don't explode, but Frontier will introduce the breaching mechanic, as mentioned by unknown artefact scientist when he was kidnapped, his hull was breached, and he blacked out.
And chance of breaching was a variable was noted on a live stream for the engineers.
So the ship "explodes" because it's gassing out - the hull is breached. But the playes ship remains. Time to board or be boarded. Keep an eye out for the cops though!
You then have your suit's life support to stay alive to repel boarders, protect that VIP holed up in the emergency life pod in their quaters, and then patch up your ship and get it back to safety.
Dang could we high-jack the other ship whilst we are at it? DNA scans on the airlock I guess
sorry got distracted and excited.
