Release EDDiscovery 18.X is now out! New modules panel upgrade and Engineering

So, as a non-cybergeek, what’s the alternative?

Pretty much what CMDR Underhill said. I recommend Ublock Origin, Windows Defender or Security Essentials, and Malwarebytes for pretty much everyone. The only exception is those who have a fiduciary duty to pay for AV (stupid but it's case law) and for them we use ESET's NOD32, but only the AV product. This will close roughly 95% of the security holes that are current. You might not stop the really clever ones but they're probably not after you to begin with.

It was, it's not.

Keep your AV program.

You're wrong. I'm an IT consultant and I keep up to date on the security stuff as well as a major portion of my client base are attorneys and folks in the financial industry. Using Norton or McAfee is worse than not having AV at all in many cases because of how abysmal they've been at closing known security holes in their product. Microsoft's solution is much better than nothing and, frankly, you've got those vulnerabilities regardless. Microsoft also has a history of, ya know, actually fixing the bugs!

Yup, nailed it. I'm a developer and very much aware that malware authors are actively targeting exploits in god-awful shovelware AV such as Norton and McAfee. As I wrote above, these products are a risk because you have incompetently written code running as a privileged process and trying to parse every incoming file. Exploit city.

Nilt knows what he's talking about. KTC is talking out of his rear-end modem port.

Hmm, if you're going to insult somebody, get their gender right would be a start... [rolleyes]
Fair enough but if you're going to guess, it's a safe bet to presume male in many case. :)

Those are worthless. They test things that aren't even the current threats, for one thing. For another, they're entirely artificial. They're sort of like the AV version of PD Power and Associates "awards". They're a marketing gimmick, nothing more. Furthermore, even if a given application does catch a few more artificial signatures they know to build their application to detect (benchmark rigging much?), if you have vulnerabilities in your AV app (and you do, I assure you) then you are more at risk than you would be without it. The bad actors out there know this stuff these days and are actively targeting the big ones. That's sort of like installing a fence but ignoring the fact that the gaps in it are 8 feet wide and 9 feet tall. Since all software has vulnerabilities, you're better off working with companies that actually fix things before the media hears about it and raises a fuss, which is the MO of Symantec and McAfee, let alone others. Microsoft actually does this regularly.

Stop relying on stuff like this and actually start looking into it via actual security research if you want to but until you do, take it from those of us who do: you're fine with Windows Defender, a good ad blocker, and MBAM. I know, right now, 28 separate vulnerabilities that I could use to infect you. They're spread across most AV applications, in fact, and that's just the AV applications. Know which ones aren't present in my list of exploits I know personally exist and that the AV vendors have yet to patch? Windows Defender and ESET's NOD32. Now, that doesn't mean those are immune to these things, either! I've just seen a number of theirs get patched up rather quickly over the years, instead of letting them languish for months.

Yes! On-topic discussion, we can do that!

Actually I'm just on my way back from exploring, I decided to try the market data tab, but I'm at Morgan's Rock and I'm just getting a blank tab. I'm carrying Jaques Still rares, I hear that was a bug, is that how it presents?

9.03 is now out.

If your using 9.01, please upgrade. 9.02/9.03 has significant speed ups on reading the history which you will like.

There was:

2034 downloads of 9.02, (+234 port).
3447+415 of 9.01

So people are still on 9.01.

Thanks

Rob

Ps.

@cmdr underhill From our current knowledge, yes the CAPI/Rare bug is still there. But I'm checking.

upgraded to 9.0.3 - "nearest stars" shows now only the ones I found, any ideas? At least there are no duplicates there anymore, but other systems were extremely useful.

Thx. Is it possible to downgrade to 9.0.2 in the mean time or it is too late? Actually I used it more than I realised :)

update: Uninstalled 9.0.3, installed 9.0.2 in the same folder and seems to be working OK.

i'm using 9.0.3.
Having problems with 3D map. I use a keyboard with mouse pad, so prefer to use the keyboard to navigate the map. The keys a,d,w,s,q,e,z,x are all functioning correctly however R and F do not seem to be working to move me up and down the y axis. Also I can no longer select a star on the map. Hovering over a star does not bring up it's name and clicking does not select it, however star selection does work for the stars that are on my travelled route. I don't think I've changed any settings. Any ideas would be appreciated.

Selecting stars in the map should be fixed for the next release.

R and F are only supposed to work if the map is in perspective mode - they are still working correctly for me if it is. Are you in the right mode?

I've used EDDiscovery to update EDSM flight log after a long trip (after turning in new discoveries), and that worked just fine before. Did something change to make this impossible?

I got a new PC so it's a new install but I copied all old logs I had into the right place. After processing EDDiscovery does show all my old data from previous months. But when I go to my EDSM.net flight log the last entry is from july 2017. I thought it would update everything that was missing up to today but it didn't.

I did add details for EGO and the log showed it was slowly updating to EGO with 1100+ old discovery entries for a while, but afaik it never shows EDSM submissions in the log? I checked the 'to EDSM' off and on as well but it doesn't seem to do anything other than saying 'refresh complete'.

Is there any way to still submit the missing data between july 2017 and 2018 to EDSM? There is an 'send unsynced EGO scans' menu entry which I think does exactly what I would want for EGO, but this option is not available for EDSM?

--EDIT: Actually, after checking EGO it appears that it only updated till july 2017 to EGO as well, and none of the entries after that. I did copy all the ED log files from two computers, even though those never played at the same days so I didn't think that would cause any issues. But I can't think of anything else that might have caused this.
