EDDiscovery Scan Data Thread Follow-Up

In the thread "EDDiscovery Scan Data Estimate", I asked how accurate the EDDiscovery tool was. I was in the beginning of an 8 month long journey through deep space. The thread is now locked but I just thought I would give a follow up to it now that I've sold my data today.

It expected my data to be around 704 million in value. This doesn't count for first discovery or terraformable bonuses as I understand it.

I had about 45 million in the bank before I started selling data.

So it basically expected me to have about 700 million in that time frame and I actually ended up with about a billion. 70% accuracy is still better than having no idea what the ballpark even is for your scan data. I still think the tool is pretty useful and cool, this post is in no way an attack on EDDiscovery. When I left the bubble I had 33 million in the bank but by the time I had reached Medusa's Rock a couple days later I had made about 12 million in scans. I still have about 14k LY to go to get back to the Bubble so this has basically already been a billion credit trip.

Exactly, first discoveries aren't taken into account by EDD, neither are simple honks. That's a lot of Money missing in the estimation. 70% is good, for me it was less than 60%.

Considering first discovery bonus is 50% (it still is right?) I don't think that's to bad an estimate for such a long trip that would likely result in a large number of first discoveries.

We have no knowledge of if it's a first discovery.

All of our estimates are based on user sourced data.

So it's not too bad

Well, I will suggest an addendum to the EDDiscovery manual, if such a thing exists:

Dear CMDR: Were you mostly flying around in the middle of nowhere? Yes? Add 50% to your expected income!

Also "Did you always check the system map and always scan the high value bodies? If you left a load of systems with a WW, 2 HMC CFTs, an AW and a Class II GG unscanned your honk values could add up to quite a lot"

Of course, it's better to be POSITIVELY surprised by a LARGER payout (as in the OP's case), so EDD not adding the bonus is the safe way to go.

On the other hand, is it not safe to say that most CMDRs using EDD mainly for exploration will mainly be scanning untagged objects? If so, why not add that bonus to the estimate?

In the OP's case, had EDD added the bonus the estimate would have been 1056m credits, compared to 996m credit, resulting in a fantastic accuracy of about 95% (with the payout being slightly LOWER than expected). Sure, the honk revenue is in there somewhere, but that seems to somehow work out overall.

Or maybe have an option in EDD to add/ignore the bonus?

EDD could maybe also check EDDB. If the scanned Body is already in de database, there is a high Chance it is already tagged (I know, not systematically, but still a very high Chance), so it doesn't add the Bonus on them. If it isn't in the database, then +50%.

I don't think that would be good. Especially within a couple thousand ly around the hub there are a lot systems tagged but not on edsm so instead having too low estimates it would just end up with too high estimates.
People should know themself if they scanned mainly untagged systems and/or leaved out a lot HMC (and other high valuable) scans they only honked.
I definitly prefer the minimum estimate we have currently over an estimate that often would be higher than the real payout.

EDD does already check EDSM for known bodies when you jump to a system and will display them in the system view/panel. AFAIK this info does not influence the estimated value, though. Adding this might be possible, but again - I guess it's not relevant for most explorers, who are out in the unknown black (i.e. 99.9% of the galaxy) where most scans are first discoveries anyway.
