'EDH vs ED' Doom Prophets, please note...

A few people have been remarking on the supposedly 'low uptake' of EDH compared to ED

This mostly seems to come from a straight-up comparison of current EDH Steam 'owners' with current ED Steam 'owners'

This comparison, however, completely misses the following important points:

- ED has been out on Steam for 302 days
- EDH has been out on Steam for only 46 days

- ED Steam figures are skewed upwards due to:
- redemption of Steam keys from some (but by no means all) pre-Steam purchasers/ KS backers etc.
- significant Steam discount/sale periods (which EDH units have not yet benefited from)

- EDH Steam figures are skewed downwards due to:

- Many EDH purchases likely to have been pre-orders from Frontierstore
- Many EDH purchasers have stated they have not/will not redeem their Steam key due to the 30% Valve-cut

If only there were some way to compare a semblance of like-with-like...
Oh, hang on, there is %^]

EDH Steam Launch: 15th December 2015 (Today: 29th January 2016)
Days since launch: 46
EDH Steam 'Owners': 64,576
http://steamspy.com/app/419270

ED Steam Launch: 2nd April 2015
Backers/Units: 419,144
https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php?t=15801&p=2044363&viewfull=1#post2044363

46 days after ED Steam Launch: 17th May 2015
Backers/Units: 533,386
https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php?t=15801&p=2257064&viewfull=1#post2257064

ED Steam units Diff:
533,386 - 419,144 = 114,242

BUT:
In the 57 days prior to ED Steam launch (4th Feb 2015 to 1st April 2015)
59,084 ED units were shifted (418,377 - 359,293)

This equates to ~1,036 ED units/day pre-Steam (via Frontierstore)

So, remove: 46 x 1036 = 47,656 non-Steam unitsfrom above figure:

114,242 - 47,656 = 66,586 ED Steam units in 46 days since launch

NOTES:
Steam keys were not available for pre-Steam purchasers until 28th May 2015
https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php?t=143652

The above ED Steam figures are therefore far more representative of the purely Steam ED purchases made between ED Steam launch on 2nd April 2015 and, 46 days hence, on 17th May 2015

TL;DR

ED had shifted ~66,586 units on Steam in the 46 days following Steam release
EDH has shifted ~64,576 units on Steam in the 46 days following Steam release

i.e.
EDH unit sales are nowhere near as bad as some people make out, but it requires a bit of work and research to get at the representative figures and, after all (to those so inclined to be disingenuous) it's far easier to just post:

LOL!
EDH vs ED!
65,576 << 689,793
<10% uptake!
#thisgameisdoomed
etc. etc. etc.

Er... ok thanks

Er... well, if people choose to post utterly misleading things like: "65,576 << 689,793 Ha! <10% uptake!" which then become ingrained and passed on as representative fact...

...isn't it also understandable that someone else actually does a bit of investigation into statements of that ilk? %^]

Good job sifting the figures and putting them in context.

Another stat that always makes me smile is the size of this forum/community. Tiny - 107K vs 1,400K sales. Or to say another way 7.6%, even if everyone was logging in. Keeping that in mind always help me smile when the forum is getting a bit (ahem) 'childish'.

Thanks henry1491, glad you appreciate it.

Something else that makes me smile is the way that threads which begin like: "65,576 << 689,793 Ha! <10% uptake! #dooooOOOOMED !"

...can run into dozens and dozens of pages of speculation based on fairly unsound comparisons, and yet, when someone focuses on doing some sensible analysis of the data it can get immediately dismissed with sentiments of "So what?" %^]

Not been in a community so singularly obsessed by the company's performance. Ever.

Mr Braben is a nice guy, he has a great game and lots of really talented people at FD. I'm sure they will go far or will be snapped up by some other publishing house with an obscene amount of money.

I get the feeling a lot of people are a bit over-defensive as they love the game but it also has it's fair share of detractors.

As forums and subreddit being very moaning and vocal - get used to it. That's how online communities are. Majority of people playing and enjoying game will never visit any of these places. Best way is to engage with people worth doing so (raising constructive criticism, etc) and just ignore others.

TBH I think it's reaction to the (often poorly researched) detractor posts. There have been so many #excrementposts regarding the supposedly poor 'performance' that it's somewhat inevitable there'll be response in-kind. I suspect that if the nay-sayers weren't so vehement there'd be minimal interest in the ongoing performance from those who are enjoying the game.
