Common new player Power Play misconceptions:
1) If it looks like everyone else is nominating a preparation system, then it must be good, right? I want my favorite system where I trade, mine or park my ship to be part of Mahon and get the top Power ranking trade bonus.
A: Not necessarily good to support what looks like a consensus in the game. There is a guide on how to determine the worth of a system when it's expanded and becomes part of Mahon's territory. If it is a loss making system, then it harms the Alliance. Systems pushed high on the Preparation list out of the red so they become white become expansion targets in the next cycle. While expansions can still be resisted, the cost of keeping "bad" systems off the Preparation list and keep "good" ones on the white list is expensive. To avoid supporting loss systems by mistake, if you have any doubt, visit the Alliance/Mahon TeamSpeak and Discord chat servers and get the facts. As a general rule, if a system's value on the list is under 63, you should not be promoting it.
You can also support our efforts by frequently refreshing the Objectives and Trade Routes priorities on the Mahon Reddit linked in the fortification paragraph below.

2) When I'm pledged to Mahon, it doesn't matter how or where I trade. Profit is profit.
A: It DOES matter how and where you trade when pledged to Mahon.
There is a dedicated and hard working team of BGS (BackGround Simulation) workers who perform a lot of complex tasks with minor factions in Mahon space. When manipulated properly, the fortification triggers (the minimum number of merits necessary to fortify a system 100%) can be lowered saving those of us who haul fortification documents 10s of thousands of merits each cycle. If you are trading with or doing missions to damage this hard work, you make things harder for everyone.
Alternatively, you can help us by learning how to trade and do missions smart. Again, join the online chats to learn more.

3) Mahon is not a combat power and I love combat. I would rather join a Power which has combat.
A: There are as many opportunities for combat for Mahon as any other power. There are wings forming on the chat every day and on the chats for the various Alliance player groups (there are MANY!)
If you have no interest in trading or fortifying, we welcome your combat and we have dedicated-skilled players ready to fly with you.
Learn how you can use your weapons to further the Alliance and support independence throughout the galaxy.
Join the chats on our Mahon Reddit chat server lists and find the player group which fits your style.
See the TeamSpeak and Discord links on the top right and the player group links further down (many have their own chat servers):

4) Did you know it's possible to fortify systems AND make a profit trading at the same time?
A: On the Mahon site at the top, click "Quick Loading Objectives & Trade Routes" button. Our current fortification priorities (where fortification is MOST EFFECTIVE) is listed in order of priority and below that, a dedicated route specifically designed to fortify and profit from trade at the same time. These routes are updated to reflect changes in the galactic economy.

5) How can I trade for max profit so I can fast track to keep my rank or increase my rank:
A: On the same page as the fortification priorities, at the top, click the "Trade Routes" tab. No matter where you are in the populated Galaxy, there are trades which earn you fast cash.
Click the "Fast Track" tabs to focus specifically on fast track fortifying. No matter how you trade in Mahon, we have targeted routes to maximize your effectiveness.
6) I have a small ship and cannot travel a long distance to fortify. I prefer to fortify systems close to Gateway.
A: Realize fortifying systems over 100% is throwing away merits. If those wasted merits could be directed toward systems which desperately need the work, our effectiveness goes up dramatically. As you see your favorite close-in system get fortified near 100%, move on to another close-in system which still needs work. Of course, getting yourself into a higher rank and larger ship makes you more effective and longer distances just as easy as the short ones used to be. Join any of the Alliance chats to get targeted ship and ranking help suited to your game play style.
7) My favorite system shows it's getting undermined. I want to fortify it so Mahon does not lose it or I have to move my ship.
A: Mahon has to turmoil to lose a system. Our fortification priorities and players avoid wasting merits so we are the most effective economy in the game. Even if your favorite system is undermined 100% or more, it's unlikely Mahon will turmoil. Throwing fortification merits at a system which has some undermining is a waste. Instead, you could help us be more effective by playing the game smart. Join any of the Alliance chats to find out how. Friendly players are there to answer your questions about Power Play, fortification priorities and the Background Simulation.
8) The descriptions of the Powers and the worth of systems is so confusing in the game. How can anyone understand this mess?
A: We have experts who do and have kept us in the Top three consistently since near the beginning of Power Play retaining #1, 33 cycles and growing. More than any other Power. We do this through understanding PP, smart decisions and careful data gathering with analysis. Join the winning team.
