ED's implementation of VR ... why it's superior

I've played a few demos on the rift but largely, ED is the only full on game I've played (until today).

I can play ED in the rift for hours and hours and I come off feeling fine.

Today I finally downloaded Eurotruck sim as I planned to get used to driving on the continent with the help of VR.

I did about two minutes delivering tomatoes between two sites in Cardiff, distance of less than a mile.

Ughhhhhg. It's floored me. The motion sickness is awful and I can't even stand up at the moment even though I finished playing about 45 minutes ago.

So I look at my ED experience and salute FD for helping me keep the vomit at bay with their svelt coding skills.

I agree, this type of game I think is the best candidate for showing off VRs potential, imo this is due to being sat in a Cockpit and flying around in an environment that has no real direction, so it makes more sense for your brain when moving around. Driving games I think share this type of benefit to a degree, but its not quite the same, as we are all used to feeling g-forces when in a car, so in a driving game, we expect to feel those when moving around, and if they are absent, we get that kind of disconnect that can cause motion sickness with some people.

It will be interesting to see how people will be affected once we have the SRVs and driving around planets, and if some people will not like it in VR. I think once we have the ability to move around in ships and stations etc, we will get a disconnect for most VR players. Just my opinion, but FPS games I think are some of the worse for VR, until we have the ability to actually use our legs to walk around on a treadmill of some kind.

Second to ED, I would say Lunar Flight is the next most natural game to play in VR. Although for myself I do have other 3rd person games that work well, but for most, I'd think cockpit based games with behavior/mechanics that we are not used to, will be the best. It would be interesting to see if we had someone that did fly spaceships for real, actually end up getting motion sickness in ED.

I found that ETS2 required me to drop down to low settings for a satisfactory VR experience.

The cause for me is high frametimes. If you install Afterburner with RivaTuner you can monitor frametimes. 16ms is really pushing it for me. The lower the better, I've seen it as low as 6-8 with second window enabled but at the time I was getting stutter, when it is this low you can't percieve any delay between head movements and screen updates, even if you cough.

The single worst moment was trying to reverse the truck in to a bay. Those moments where you slam the breaks on expecting to feel the associated forces ..... and you get nothing.

Immediately my brain started to throw out panic signals. I spent the next hour curled up on the couch feeling like I was being punished for defying the expected physics of this world.

I'll drop the detail setting to see if it improves latency and reduces lag.

Not had those issues myself with ETS2, although it has stopped working for me recently (are you using version 7 or 6?). Have you tried iRacing? Sublime vr experience.

iRacing works well with no stomach churning issues. It's just ETS2 which made my head swim. I'll persist - it's the only way Fatty Logistics are going to make any money.

I think there has to be a disconnect between reality and VR to not feel ill. If you have no real life frame of reference for what you are experiencing in VR your brain won't think "somethings wrong, time to evacuate stomach".

In ED you have no idea what it feels like to pilot a space ship, in a racing game, you have no idea what it feels like to drive a super fast car at break neck speeds around a race track. There is enough of a disconnect to not feel sick.

Warthunder is not a space game and I must say it actually runs smoother and no motion sickness whatsoever compared to ED. Only problem with warthunder is that players icon are not visible in vr putting you in a great disadvantage compared to other non vr players (this would also resolve the low res issue of oculus).

got my DK2 today and after a bit of graphics setting tweaking I'm blown away by the experience. Everything is SO BIG lol. and being 'in' your ship is just incredible.

I found i can run fine on the very high quality settings i was using for monitors which was nice and I've been able to help slightly with the aliasing using nvidia control panel settings but tbh the resolution doesnt bother me at all, which is strange because i was really worried it would. That extra dimension of depth and the total immersion is absolutely worth the clarity trade off to me.

Its amazing. I dont think i could go back to monitor lol

Awesome! Another satisfied customer for Oculus ;)

Mate I recommend you try Lunar Flight also for an amazing space based vr experience. Worth the £6!

And for a quick demo worth checking out, I really rate this music vr demo/experience called Surge, free to download..

Anyway, yeah there's no going back to monitor based gaming now! :D

I have 3 42inch screens in surround @5860 by 1080 and still only used them once in elite, the other few hundred hours playing is with the rift, No contest.

My HOTAS setup arrived today too and wow does it add to the experience in the rift. Now i feel completely immersed. Gonna take some time learning to aim with a stick instead of a mouse though haha :p

Sounds like the start of my Oculus Experience. :)
First a Hotas.WOW .then get a seat to mimic position in game.even more WOW .then a better quality Hotas with foot pedals. SOO NICE .Sound is equally important! get a high quality external DAC. PERFECT..then get a steering wheel cuz what you learned regarding immersion transfers to driving games. SWEET SH..Z. Start racing Assetto Corsa realizing you need better pedals at least- Buy full Fanatec racing setup WOW AGAIN! Reading and watching everything about Motion simulators..... OMG....

Stop now before you descent into the spiral of VR DOOM!

Sounds like a tomato allergy.
