EDSM Visitor Count - Accurate or no?

So in preparation for the Dead End's Circumnavigation, I've been looking at the more exploration-focused 3rd party tools including EDSM. What struck me most is the number of CMDRs who have visited certain systems, and I was wondering how accurate these figures are?

Ie. Does it only record visits for those who use EDSM, integrated with Captain's Log or ED Discovery or something similar? Or does it know how many players total have been to certain systems?

At the time of writing, these are the number of visitors:

Saggittarius A* - 2103
Beagle Point - 709
Sepositus Beacon - 8

One thing is nonetheless clear to me, the edges of the galaxy are vastly less travelled than the centre :D

The source of EDSM data is journals from the PC players who use EDDiscovery or upload directly their logs to the web site. Not connected to the in-game data in any way.

Edit: EDDiscovery if the user has enabled the To EDSM option in the settings. Also, some players upload their journal events in bulk after they sell the data and not as they visit the systems.

Can't say it better :)
Visitor count obviously only counts our users and their flight logs!

This is what I had suspected to be the case, the numbers were quite low. Thanks for your answers!

Same for Captain's Log and EDMC, if people enabled upload of their logs.

I still can't figure how Frontier did not add from the start some sort of statistical monitoring thing.

Yeah, I'd love to see a heat-map of everywhere that players have been.
