Hardware & Technical EDTracker, still alive?

Howdy commanders o7

After having done a bit of research into head trackers, I decided to give the EDTracker Pro Wireless a go because it's priced much more reasonably than a TrackIR.

However I was pretty bummed when I found they were out of stock, so I put myself on the notify list. I've also tried sending them a message using their contact form, nearly every day in the last week but haven't had a response.

Just wondering if they're still making/selling these and when I might expect to be able to order one. If I end up waiting too long I'll just end up getting a TrackIR I reckon. Would rather give my money to EDTracker though because I love that they developed it based around E:D as a cheaper way of providing a great tracking solution.

Anyone else had any experiences with them lately? Or have one they'd like to sell me? 😉

Cheers,
Juxta

Hi Globusdiablo,

Yep I've sent them about 4-5 messages from that site now and haven't had a response. I'm starting to get desperate and would much prefer to buy one of these vs. a TrackIR.

I'll give it a couple more days and if I don't hear from them, I'll just fork out for the alternative I think.

Cheers

You can get away with something much cheaper, around 25€ or so, simple ir leds and a ps3eye camera will do (trackir clone). I was using it for ages with elite, along with facetracknoir with (ironically) an ir plugin. Trust me it is good enough and does the same job of translating your head movements to the screen.

Here's what I have (or rather had, now I exclusively use VR), the offer is in Polish but you will get the idea. You can do it yourself tbh, it's not rocket science. Also, he ships abroad too, so you can buy it there I guess.

Thanks for the tip.

I looked into Trackhat and got the wireless Clip Plus bundle. Much cheaper than a TrackIR and seems to do exactly the same thing.

Shame I couldn't get a response from EDTracker but at least I'll be able to look around with ease, very soon!

Might be bursting a bubble here, but I had to return my initial trackhat as it was too sensitive to light/reflection in the room. This was the main reason that the EDTracker was/is a perfect choice for me. It doesn't give a rat's about your living environment.

Having tried both, I would suggest hammering EDTracker. Their site is up, but as it's run by bleeding hearts, customer service might not always be on par for the course.

Depends on your environment really. It's true, this being IR led based it's susceptible to excessive amounts of sunlight. I used it in a living room which has south facing windows. On the most sunny days I had to pull the curtains on the windows and that was sufficient. I also remember that on the brightest days I went as far as making sure there were no light spills from the bottom of the curtains. The curtains were transparent to a high degree, so I wouldn't worry too much about it - it never happened that I couldn't play because of sunlight.

IDK if reflection would be so much of a problem here, because you're looking straight into the camera which is located on top of the screen usually. Thus, reflections shouldn't be a problem, unless there is really crazy amount of reflective surfaces throwing fake ir at the camera.

TL; DR: never had major problems with "hattrack". The occassional hiccup can be solved with turning it off and on again and resetting the view using hotkeys. Doesn't happen often.

I reached out to EDTracker Ltd on Twitter this afternoon and they tell me that they are in the process of relaunching the site today. If you go there today (Monday) it's a bit of a building site with links still on the old site, but they are obviously alive and kicking. Perhaps one of them will be along presently to explain the changes.

Hello Folks,

Sorry for dropping off the world but we're now alive again :)

Same great wired and wireless products, now with simplified shipped (free in the UK) and usb cables included as standard.

The downtime was while we moved from 'shipping out of the garage' to 'shipping out of a warehouse' and it took much longer than anticipated to join all the dots.

We've got a new website to boot. There's limited stock showing but that's only so we can test the waters with a few orders before bumping levels back up to normal.

Cheers!

I did consider that as I had read about the potential for interference. My sim pit is in my garage/den/study area where there are no windows, just "mood lighting" so that shouldn't be an issue ;)

I hope your relocation allows you guys to become even better as a business now. What a journey it must have been for you all, to have started out just as a concept at home and to where you are now. This was one of the reasons why I wanted to purchase one of your trackers but most importantly, it seems like a quality product. I tinker with a bit of arduino myself so the idea was close to my heart.

I guess I just tried to get into headtracking at a bad time. Oh well, next time hey! :)

Cheers, Juxta

I just placed my order for the wireless Edtracker. The trackhat clip wouldn't work for me in my Den as there are two double sliding glass patio doors behind my Cockpit chair.

That's great news, I'm really glad the business is doing well!
I've had a DIY EDTracker for years built into a Tictac box and since getting Project Cars 2 I've been itching for an upgrade to wireless. Last time I looked though I feared EDTracker was no more. Expect an order from me maybe next payday hehe.
