Effect on reputation high = 1% WTH?

I did an assassination mission for the feds. Its said it was a high effect on Reputation, it gave me 1% rank increase. Please tell me this isn't right.
So the Sol permit takes 300 missions?

SOL permit is early into the ranking so it doesn't look quite right. If you're ranking up though that is perfectly fine since you need a lot more points to rank to the next level.

I still haven't seen testing that shows a correlation between reputation and rank progression.

We know certain mission types give more rank. It also seems like different values of the same mission type give different rank increase (payout, pilots rank required?) - but it is hard to tell since most who test it are already highly ranked and we can't see fractions of a percent.

It also depends on the magnitude of the mission. A kill 60 pirates for 2 million was giving me more than kill 9 pirates for 200k, despite them both being high effect on rep.

Rank increase is dependent on:

1) The type of mission.
2) The influence rating.
3) The profits.

I cant figure out how it all fits together. No matter how I try to describe the relation between these I encounter something that goes against it.

Sadly this was my experience with trying to figure out what was giving me more rank or rather give rank than any other factor. Just when you think you might be onto a corelation in missions type , payment etc it throws you a spanner ...

Previously i was doing circuit charity runs through all the stations at cubeo but they run dry so i opted for the courier data missions , generally these gave 1% to rank for only a few thousand credit , however i later did another 4 of these missions for roughly the same payout and rank yet there was no change in rank % at all.

This was all done with an imperial rank of count.

Edit: i had to grab my cobra mkIII when a rather unsavoury individual with a cutter showed up and blasted me in my smuggler kitted asp .. just couldnt shake him off and my shields only class 3 with no armour mods.

Reputation gain is what affects your naval rank progression, so you want medium and high Rep gain missions, but that's just ONE of the factors involved. What your rank is, what the mission pays, that state of the parties involved, distance traveled, and more, all come into play.

I did an assassination mission, High Rep, 80k payout, went from Count 52 to Count 52, which is what I figured would happen. Did another assassination, High Rep, 500k payout, Count 52 to Count 54. Took a delivery mission, Medium Rep, 800 pay(not 800k, 800 credits, less than a grand) and gained 4% on my naval rank progression, as the delivery was food items to a minor faction in a Famine state, and that gives a lot more than taking food to someone in a Boom state.

So I just gotta grab all kinds of missions and see what happens. Oh and don't take notice of the payout.
Actually that assassination was only one system away. I'm sure I got more % for delivering some "performance enhancers" like 5 jumps away.

I keep forgetting that not everyone started with a Sol permit.

Its really annoying.
I think every Human should have a birth right to visit SOL. Its the cradle of Humanity, And all that. LOL

Rep does not equal Rank. There is a hidden Rank XP variable at play. Now, typically higher Rep missions do carry more Rank XP with them, but it also depends on the value and the activity. Combat Missions with High Rep seem to give Rank XP values on the higher end.

I think (read: guess!) that there is occassionally some lag as well. Some times I do a mission, get absolutely no rank increase. I then fly towards my next target and by the time I get there I suddenly have 1-3% gain without having done a thing. Doesn't make cracking this black box any easier!

To add to this. Rep generally goes to the faction you are doing the mission for. The only time a power faction (Feds/Empire/Alliance) actually gives you a mission is when you're ranking up.

Just go to Tun and donate until you have the rank. Only takes about an hour of quitting back and forth between modes.

Yep. I've always accepted that it's something "type of mission" x "influence rating" x "profit", but last night I did a low influence simple delivery mission for relatively low pay (~300k or so), and I got +4% (I'm between Baron and Viscount). This is the highest % I've ever received for a single mission since the bar was introduced. I didn't do any other missions last night, so lag seems to be out of the question, unless it's lagging from several sessions ago.

I think whatever the hidden rank XP each mission has also has it's own random range, and that range might be quite large. I might have just gotten lucky and got one with an extremely high hidden XP.

Well since i was forced to move away from cubeo for tonights play due to a very friendly cutter cmdr using me as target practice i went and did combat missions for empire factions around beta 2 tucanae ... i had several of these missions and each had high rep , medium influence and payments of about 300k to 500k and a rank ranging from master to dangerous ... every 1 i did was either 1% or less .. i have a bit of free time tomorrow and will try and do a bit of digging further.

Yeah, this happens to me as well, do a mission, turn it in, no change in rank % at all, so I get another mission, head out, do it, come back, double check my % before turning it in and..hey, that's higher than it was when I took off.... Seen that with my Combat/Trade/Exploration ranks as well, sell something and make a million profit, Trade rank doesn't change. Leave the station to go get more goodies and my Trade rank suddenly jumps up after I'm out of the station.
