Eh up, looks like fun in 't North

What is a "slapformer"? Sounds like hitting people in the face.

... from that Grauniad article: "... The game is a “comedy slapformer,” a phrase penned by their publisher, ..."

I assume one will interact as in the duo's previous game (free on Steam) The Good Time Garden

The blurb there being:

Explore a throbbing pink world full of strange naked creatures to gather food for your friend in this short, surreal experience.

The control diagram might hint at the use of "slap" to interact:

I have to say it is weird and rather naughty,

I never understood what they are singing - only the refrain. It matches like a "fist to the eye" to the art style I'd say.

I only recently came across the rude original folk song - http://mudcat.org/@displaysong.cfm?SongID=449 - Lily the Pink was a real person (Lydia Pinkham) who's herbal supplement (for "ladies' issues") can still be bought.

I also didn't know about the backing singers in the Scaffold's clean version:

"Backing vocalists on the recording included Graham Nash (of The Hollies), Elton John (then Reg Dwight), and Tim Rice; while Jack Bruce (of Cream) played the bass guitar.

The lyrics include a number of in-jokes. For example, the line "Mr Frears had sticky out ears" refers to film director Stephen Frears, who had worked with The Scaffold early in their careers; while the line "Jennifer Eccles had terrible freckles" refers to the song "Jennifer Eccles" by The Hollies, the band Graham Nash was about to leave."

I find it's like a song to accompany a Monty Python sketch

I remember the song from my youth...got to number one in the UK singles charts back then. I was 10 years old in 1968 when it got to Top of the pops. The year before I watched Neil Armstrong set foot on the moon live on TV...scary :)

In case anyone is interested, this is an excellent 'alternative history' series I watched recently on Apple TV. It starts with the pretext that the USSR landed on the moon first in June 1969 and goes from there to almost present day over 4 seasons.... It's a drama/hard sci-fi series that mixes fact with fiction in a very clever way using real personalities (portrayed by actors) within and without NASA and ROSCOSMOS, I ended up binge watching the whole lot, it's a fascinating take on the whole space race...and a very, very good watch. Season 4 is currently in progress.

I think that bit could do with a spoiler as the initial build-up and reveal was exceptionally well done.

BTW - Am I the only one that finds Joel Kinnaman really anoying?

Usually...I do too...but he's pretty good in this series even considering he's the main character :D

Hidden spoiler tags added too :)

No spoilers needed though when I think about it. Each season of 10 episodes covers a decade after the opening episode which covers the events of 1969...The 70's are further covered in season one, 80's in season two and 90's in season three with a fictional/factional space race history assuming the event that kicked it off in 1969 had happened as portrayed in the opening minutes of the first episode.

The first Lunar landing in '69 and the completely factual history of NASA and ROSCOSMOS from Sputnik to Gagarin, Gemini and Mercury to Apollo leading up to it is simply the lynchpin for the entire series...as it actually was back in the decade of the 'space race'. It really was touch and go back then as to who would be first 🤷‍♂️

I always wondered what would have happened if the Americans had come second back then. Buzz Aldrin and Neil Armstrong both think the same as I do...that America winning the race to the moon wasn't necessarily the best thing for NASA, the USA or especially, the continuation of manned exploration into our solar system :)

You have no idea just how insanely political it was. It was "war by other means". Had to live through it.

Manned space still has a supernatural hold on our attention.

A late '50s baby I was. So when the Apollo missions and moon landing were happening, I was pure prime adolescent curiosity on several topics; space, military and art. I read everything I could on those subjects which was a challenge way out on a farm. Trips to the library were big events to me.
Wife and I really enjoyed The Expanse, so I'm planning on watching this one ^^ with her. Hopefully she'll get hooked.
Have a great day

PSA - or just a bit of useless info:

I have loads of controllers etc connected to my main PC for flight sim flying (and ED of course) - this has resulted in this game interpreting something as a "move left" command continuously and so basically the game controller actually doesn't. I didn't bother trying to eliminate the conflict as the game runs perfect on my laptop and I don't see the point in having to swap out connections as flying is the main use of the PC.

BTW - Why it defaults to Game Controller input I don't know - if there was a way to force it to start in M&K only I'd be happy to try that.

P.S. Still love the game, the humour is great and as a Scot living in exile in Yorkshire I find it very relatable.
