Either he's an amazing crack shot, or something weird happened

In a conflict zone in Sorbago, having a great time, killed an ASP or two. I'm fighting another asp, he is closing in on me, I hear a noise and all of a sudden i'm in a slow spin. No ship control. No thrust. Shields are up, hull is slightly damaged (still in the 90s, may have already been there from previous fights). I'm no longer under attack and the ASP has moved on and is fighting others. I look over at my modules tab and I can see everything is at 100% EXCEPT my thrusters which are now at 0%. Power usage is at 99%. No thrusters. Can't maneuver, can't jump, and even if I could I can't get into a station anyway.

So ...

1. Is this a bug? Why were my shields still up and all other modules at 100%, but ONLY thrusters are down? Even if he had target thrusters shouldn't it have been, I don't know maybe an actually prolonged fight with shields going down etc and other modules and hull being damaged?

2. If I had an auto field repair unit, would it have been able to fix my thrusters from 0%?

3. Do I have to self destruct?

Going to lose a good 100k or so in bounty payouts ... just seems weird because there was no actual fight, just all of a sudden no thrusters and yet everything else is fine. Weird.

Sounds like you got a hit on your thruster subsystem, railgun perhaps.

This happened to me a few days ago while in a turning loop, my Cobra was hit that way.
I had full shields, full armor... Just my thrusters were shot out. The eagle I was fighting had a railgun.
 
The actual question then would be: can railguns pierce shields and hit the subsystems while shields are online? I would believe no, but haven't tested this

I wouldn't be surprised if they could, I know in Premium Beta, and beginning of regular beta a pair of them could easily one shot a cobra to oblivion. However they generate extreme amounts of heat, especially used in tandem, and once the power system was implemented it became very difficult to equip more than one at a time, and not have some critical systems shut off. If an NPC is equipping more than one at a time I would want to know how they are doing it, and if it isn't a glitch of some sort. The description says that they do both Thermic and Kinetic damage which means it would be devastating to both the shields and the hull on a direct hit.
 
Yeah I know the one-shot videos ^^ but then the shields went offline + the hull went from 100 to 0 instantly. What I meant is if they are able to destroy subsystems without disabling the shields first (-> piercing shields).
This would be interesting: they could be used as a counter to shield cell banks (what they already do kinda...their burst damage is so high that you may be able to instantly remove the shields. Don't know how many you need for that, a full railgun setup is rather impractical. Last time I used them in Beta 3 in my Asp and then saw I had to reload for nearly 100k ^^)

THis same thing happened to me, but on an anaconda. I got hit with his huge hardpoint plasma accelerator, INSTANTLY killed my thrusters. Those things are wicked strong at close range and with direct hits, asp coulda been packing a couple.
 
Would be nice with actual stats/info on this. You check a ship that is hostile and it has a railgun - RUN!

Right now we just dont know. Should conduct a test. I think the info will come faster from that than asking FD. :D Also on the matter if wear & tear can destroy modules from within would be nice to know.

You can cycle through his sub-sytems and check what he has.
 
The wear and tear seems irrellevant but I'd love to know if a repair unit would fix systems or is it just for armour?

Wear and tear reduces the strength of your hull.

Well, it's been renamed to structural integrity now.

At 0%, your hull has 70% of it's effectiveness. The way to look at that is like this

Say your hull has 1000 points of integrity
at 0% SI. it will now have 700 points.


So that 100 point hit that would reduce your hull by 10% with 100% SI, will reduce it by 14% with 0%
 
It looks like I'm going to have to self destruct. I guess the thing that confused me is that my shields didn't drop, I just heard sort of a bang noise and that was it. Tumbling slowly in space ... the AI didn't even have the decency to finish me off, he just turned and fought others. A bit cruel if you ask me!

Yeah, that does seem particularly cruel - must be one of the mean AI. I'm surprised he didn't leave you a mine to voluntarily run into - rather like giving you a gun with a single bullet so you "do the right thing" :)
 
So I did self destruct and I immediately went to a high tech system to buy a repair module.

Was disappointed to find that the repair module does NOT work on thrusters. I can understand the power plant not being repairable, but the thrusters? So essentially if your thrusters are crippled you are DOA, SOL, whatever other acronym you want to use that basically means dead. There are no options besides self destruct at that point.

Have you tried shutting down some other systems and then try and bring the thrusters online?
