Either he's an amazing crack shot, or something weird happened

Wear and tear reduces the strength of your hull.

Well, it's been renamed to structural integrity now.

At 0%, your hull has 70% of it's effectiveness. The way to look at that is like this

Say your hull has 1000 points of integrity
at 0% SI. it will now have 700 points.

So that 100 point hit that would reduce your hull by 10% with 100% SI, will reduce it by 14% with 0%

So is there a way to repair structural integrity or is it kinda just an evil we have to live with?

The OP's post explains my first assassination mission this evening. I found the target NPC Anaconda, and was doing my usual of "let them shoot first" (I'm in a Cobra). As we closed distance, the 'Conda one-shot, taking out shields and leaving me stationary. Thrusters were 0%, everything else 99%. I quit/saved, but on coming back discovered the effect is a dead ship and in the end I self-destructed, for my first death since Gamma 1.0 started. Plus, losing the mission dinged me with my 'home' system, dropping back from Allied status to just Friendly.

I had no idea anything could do that. I've never really been a fighter, and perhaps going 'Conda hunting in a Cobra borders on "a very brave decision, Minister".

This happened to me about 20 minutes ago. Was fighting him fine then he starts shooting someone else... Next thing i know without taking any hits everything is malfunctioning. It started with my thrusters then canopy and from there EVERYTHING went wrong.

It looks like I'm going to have to self destruct. I guess the thing that confused me is that my shields didn't drop, I just heard sort of a bang noise and that was it. Tumbling slowly in space ... the AI didn't even have the decency to finish me off, he just turned and fought others. A bit cruel if you ask me!

Don't self destruct, switch everything off let your ship ice up and drift. Your oxygen will run out and in the last 60 seconds the breathing and choking gets really quite intense and scary.

The end result is the same but its more dramatic that just clicking self destruct.

Three words:

You got owned.

I normally target the power plant, as that results in an instakill before the hull reaches zero.

Yes, your death/killing enemies doesn't solely rely on the hull getting to zero. I've killed enemies where their hull is .. What, 50-60% maybe more. The best method for doing this is using weapons which deal lethal damage in one area - missiles, rail gun, plasma accelerator.

A a single hit from one of those, whilst unshielded, could mean that you're a goner - be it your thrusters dying or asphyxiation.

Edit:
Check the 'Repair' menu every time you dock. Your integrity will always be <100%.

It would be nice for a Dev to explain how this can work, because it sounds like a bug! I personally don't understand why a system as critical as the thrusters in a space ship wouldn't have an emergency back-up system that would kick-in after some time period & possibly some special adjustments or be repairable with the repair kit (were's Scotty when you need him?). If an enemy has the ability to fire a single shot through your shields with any weapon in the game and cripple you like that, it sounds like a BUG to me. Does this mean that with this 'special NPC only weapon' a Sidewinder can take down a Conda with one shot? If it's not an NPC only weapon then the Dev's need to explain how it works, because I don't see it in Outfitting when I'm looking.

Replying to Defacto...

I don't think that's it. After I bought the field repair unit I was on an assassination mission. As usual the anaconda got through my shields and I took some hull damage. Several of my components were damaged including thrusters which went down to 90%. The repair unit fixed everything except my power plant, which I knew from beta is not fixable except in station, and it did not fix the thrusters which was a disappointment. I had plenty of "ammo" left in the repair unit. Usually what happens is with the unit installed and powered, when you power off damaged modules it will automatically repair. When I powered off the thrusters that didn't happen.

Don't get your thrusters shot out or you're screwed!!
