Electromagnetic pulse (EMP) - Deployable and Attachable

An EMP could be fired out like the same as the thing that makes ships drop their cargo, or it could be dropped like a mine so a chasing ship would loose power for a few seconds. But somehow they seem kinda over powered, or is that just me? it could be a choice between a certain amount of explosive mines or emp mines. (are heat sinks droppable?)
 
Heak sinks ARE dropped, that's the whole point of these.

Still, I would be surprised if they didn't at least consider those. Whether such a thing will make it in-game or not will remain a mystery for now, because there are many ways it could be too powerful compared with other weaopns, but you can be sure they gave it a though, just like they surely thought about radar jammers/decoys and weaponry that makes your ship overheat.
 
One problem so far with all suggestions regarding devices that "disable the power" on another ship - shutting off the power shuts off the shields, and they take a while to get back up after power comes back. Therefore, any such device automatically becomes a shield-buster weapon, and not simply a "disturb your electronics" utility.

(It also would shut off thrusters, meaning the target would tumble helplessly, uncontrolled and without shields, in other words: as good as dead.)

If inertia is kept (which is the case if I read correctly, just starting out so haven't flown in space yet) the "disabled" ship would just keep going the way it was going before beeing hit. So unless it was making a turn without the FA it'd just keep going straight ahead at the same speed.
And if the EMP is a mine type device it'd be behing you so you'd need some time to turn around and start shooting the disabled ship. Thus making it more of a defensive weapon than an offensive one, depending on the delay needed for the ship to reboot.
 
Maybe to balance it out, it could be that shields reflect all electromagnetic interference so EMPs will only work if the shields are down. or using it could automatically re charge the hit ships shields (a quarter or a third recharge should suffice) but disable the ship for around 5 to 10 seconds depending on the quality of the EMP.
