ELEX - from the Gothic devs, a sci-fi sandbox rpg thing.

So i saw this on GOG yesterday:

https://www.gog.com/game/elex

And it seems a likely candidate for a xmas gift to myself, but not right away. I never buy games on release (well i did make an exception for ED and a rare few others down recent years), preferring to see how the patches go, and see the player feedback and pick up general info like on modding the game etc.

But yeah, looks pretty sweet, anyone got some thoughts on it?

Completed it once already, don't know if I'm going to go for a second or third run-through, took me about 60 hours (a pretty decent duration).

It feels kinda like a cross between Gothic and Fallout. The enemies do NOT scale. If it's tough at this location, they'll be the same toughness later on. It *IS* open world so you don't have to do the quests, but the enemies stop you from exploring too much at the early parts of the game.

Earlier on, before the patch, there was a money/trader/item/crafting exploit. That meant that you could unlock ALL the skills since you could always go to the trainers and purchase them. And if you lack the skill points, you could craft potions to give them to you. So you could be a fully developed character without leaving the town of the faction you've chosen to ally with.

But they've patched that loophole so I don't know - haven't started on my second run yet.

Sandbox sci-fi? From the makers of Gothic? Without such as lvl'ed monsters? How did I ever miss this?!

Its single player, so I personally dont care if people cheat/exploit/console command/whatever. :)

I'm playing it now. 39 hours so far. What strikes me most in this game is the size of your map and the quality of the detail placed on it. It's simply wonderful.

The combat system (initially) and the dialogues follow the line of PB games. But on the other hand, the consequence of your choices and how the quests interrelate is surprising and well done. But the difficulty of the game can be frustrating for some (for me it's sensational), it can take more than 20 hours to be able to have a character with some advantage only in certain matches. I have almost 40 hours and I still choose my matches. The weapons and equipment you acquire make all the difference, but you must have certain levels in order to use them. And the detailing of the game world, for those who like to explore is the high point of the game.

See this is the sort of thing i might have bought pre Witcher 3. But that game has raised every bar i know for gaming aside from maybe the combat. Everything else was top drawer stuff. Voice acting, story, environment, locations, scale ... I could go on. Anyway this Elex just seems to not come close for me.

Elex and Witcher 3 are entirely different beasts, though. I love the Wild Hunt for the story and the sidequests being all memorable. But Elex is a return to form for Piranha Bytes, and they deliver a really good Gothic experience. It's a more freeform game where the story takes a backseat being pretty cookie cutter, to give space for very enjoyable exploration and the "do whatever the hell you want approach". I contemplated for a while, but got it and had a lot of fun with it so far.
