Elite / Frontier Elite 25th Anniversary Ltd Ed. CD

Like many I brought Elite when I was 25 years younger ;) and played it to death, although i only managed to get to 'Deadly'. I still have my old game saves and ocasionally dust of the Acorn Electron and load up the tapes! I later got a BBC B and brought the disk version, but as I had spent soooo many hours (I only discovered the 'jump' feature after some time!) on the electron version I could never bring myself to progress through the game from the beginning again. One of these days I will convert the gamesave to UEF so I can use it with an emulator.

I brought Frontier and still have that on a ThinkPad running DOS that I kept specifically for the purpose of running Frontier Elite II (although the DOS soundcard drivers don't work so have to use the PC speaker!)

Emulators and spare laptops are annoying though and I would love to buy a "Special Edition Elite 25th Anniversary CD" with all of the Elite series games on, ported for a modern computer with the ability to load old gamesaves!!

Hi Tonewheeldude
I read in retro gamer that when they did the Electron version of Elite Braben and Bell had to return the computer to Acorn, but before thay sent it back they put a note inside saying this was the machine used to make Elite.
Since I read that I had vision of people taking screwdriver to Electrons:)

Unfortunately Frontier Developments have indicated on several occasions that they don't have enough time available to re-work the old Elite and Frontier games for modern machines, so I think such a CD is highly unlikely.

Anyway, Elite, Elite Plus, Frontier and First Encounters can all be played through DOSBox :)

Its a quote from John Carpenter film Darkstar,if you are familiar with the film. You know what bomb number 20 gets up to.:D

Another great thing we can thank the awsomeness that is 'Darkstar' for is that, along with 'Blade Runner' it was said to be one of the main insprations for 'Red Dwarf' by Grant and Nayler and when you look at the more gritty, cynical tone of the first 2-seasons it's pretty obvious.

call me mad but i think red dwarf when down hill very quickly after season 2, 1 and 2 were my favs undoubtly.

I'd hardly call you mad, from what I've heard over the years a great deal of people prefered season 1 and 2. The problem is not so much that it went downhill but rather that after season 2 they decided to basicaly create a completlly new kind of show with a radically different aproach, more silly, slapstick ect.

So I try not to compare the epic win that was season 1 and 2 to what followed but see them as different shows and on that basis I can apreciate them for what they were and some like 'Back to Reality' I really do rate highly.

As a 14-15 year old when they were first aired, every new series was like the second coming.

To be fair, viewing them again now, as the series number gets higher the quality goes down, and they are only really enjoyable for their nostalgia value.

Still, the idea of a millionaire Lister having a huge statue of himself built in his courtyard, and making it so that it pees champagne, is still hilarious. I think that is the first thing i would buy if i won the lottery. That was from one of the later series, so they do have their moments. It's one of those things, the thought of which, will always cheer you up no matter how down you may be feeling.
