Elite / Frontier Elite-A Not Working

First post, so if this isn't the place or has already been answered, please correct me!
Anyway, I just downloaded Elite-A, having really enjoyed the original version, but for some reason whenever I attempt to leave the station I get the message "Not Found" at the bottom of the screen and the game locks up. Any suggestions, or did I get a bad copy? This is the one I've been trying to use:

Thanks in advance!

If you're looking for Elite to play on your PC the simplest to look at would be Elite for the PC which you can get from Ian Bell's Website

Please note I would recommend Elite over Elite Plus for the more 'authentic' feel.

If you're wanting to look at a modern game in the Elite style then in my humble opinion your best bet would be to look at Oolite

Further you may be interested in the Retro Lave Christmas Special on Elite from the lovely folks over at Lave Radio

Best of luck and keep flying!

Thanks Eid, but I'm looking specifically for Elite-A. And I am using a BBC emulator, which is how I played the original, so playing it on the PC isn't an issue.

I don't know if you're using BeebEm as the emulator, but if you are you need to select BBC Model B Plus as the hardware. The game should then run ok.

I just had a quick play-around with BeebEm, and found the same problem as you. I managed to get around it by setting the Hardware Model to "BBC Model B Plus" in the "Hardware > BBC Model" menu.

Hope this fixes things.

Great work Steve, that did it! I was trying to run it through BBC Master, which I suppose isn't possible or just invited other problems.

Well the game is interesting so far, even if the Adder is a bit tedious to use. Anyone else have much experience with this version of Elite? It seems to be more obscure than it should be!

I run BeebEm for all my emulation needs. From the same STH site (a few of which I contributed to Dave M who used to maintain it) is the Elite Master and Tube Enhanced edition- that shows what can be done when you emulate and run the top end of Acorn BBC hardware. I thought Elite-A was an unofficial hacked version that has the odd bug in it, but I have to say I've not gone that deep into that version once I'd found out above the enhanced editions. I've still got my BBC Master and original copies of Elite, although I never boot it up anymore as I think emulation has got THAT good.

Sometimes I look at BBC Computers for sale on Ebay and consider making a bid. But, as you say, emulation though programs such as BeebEm is so good that actually buying a Beeb would be for nostalgic purposes only.

And my wife would kill me

Sorry it took a while but you need to change the DFS ROM in BeebEm for Elite-A to work.

From BeebEm - go to Hardware -> Edit Rom Configuration.

Click on the DFS.rom line, and choose Edit Rom. Inside the BBC folder you'll find wdfs.rom and choose that.

Then, Ok, and reset the Beeb.

When it loads yo should see Watford Electronics DFS 1.44

That'll work with Elite-A. :)

Yeah, I think that's the problem with the actual hardware nowadays- cheap(ish), but takes up a lot of extra room and aesthetically isn't necessarily compatible with the other half's views! Particularly when it takes seconds to get it running on whatever your preferred current device is.

So, how do you connect a Microvitec CUB monitor onto your Raspberry Pi? And the key symbols are all wrong! :D

LOL, now there's a challenge. I wonder how much radiation exposure I've given myself, sitting in front of one of those CUB monitors for hours on end for all those years...!

Yeah, I had same problem and I solved it to remake disk image from individual files and use some disk os rom. It was ages ago so I will try find files for ya.

Ok found it.

http://www.prekladytextu.eu/EliteA.zip

just run emulator BeebEm.exe and it should create userdata folder in your documents where you can find ELITEA.SSD image that working fine.

Disk OS rom should be ACORN 1770 DFS and emulator should be set already. There is my save disk as well. Hope it helps. I think Watford disk OS rom worked as well.
