Elite and Carrier Command and some positive thoughts

Elite on the BBC (at work) and later on the C64 (at home) completely blew me away. In 1987, when I bought an Amiga A500, the game I was really looking forward to was Carrier Command, having seen it running on the ST. While it is completely different from Elite, the feeling of freedom and control in a 3D world/universe was simlar for me, and it remains one of my all time favourite games.

I have to say that it wasn't until Frontier Elite 2 came out did I feel the original game had been done some justice, the 16 bit versions of Elite being a bit unambitious in my view. For my money, and looking at the time I've spent playing it (and despite differing views on some of the decisions taken) Elite Dangerous has knocked the ball clean through the pavillion. There are so many cool aspects in the game I can lose myself in. They don't get as much credit as I think they deserve, but the way FD has enlarged Mining and Exploration I think is superb. I was hoping for space legs in the run-up to Frontier Elite 2, so for me Odyddey is a very exciting prospect. And now I've just seen Microprose are planning to release Carrier Command 2 in Spring!

Despite 2020 I'm finding things to look forward to next year. :)

I loved Carrier Command on the Amiga, so I'm an easy sale! It looks retro and way better at the same time.

I beat the original in the end; there was an island that could be picked off which made the opposition carrier have to make a huge detour to recapture it which let you capture a number of islands in response...

Have you tried Carrier Command Gaea Mission by Bohemia Interactive ?
Yes, it got a lot of flack for got the vehicles' pathing issues, and the first person shooter intro not being Halo, but I thought it was pretty darn good.

I highly recommend using the Deadly Islands mod with it - it adds a massive amount to the game (and is all customisable) and does wonders for the Walrus’ pathfinding, I have been able to set routes for them and they actually managed to follow them without getting stuck on trees 😅

That map, and the "red avalanche" signifying the enemy carrier's progress, put me through some tense times. :)

I remember my first encounter with the enemy carrier, I was panicing with the (actually excellent) controls and adjusting damage repair priorities while trying to launch my Mantas in a counterattack. Then he took out my aicraft lift, and I just watched all the other systems gradually fail. Brilliant. :)
