Elite and Oculus Rift... Simply wow

Hi all,

I first played elite on my old Acorn Electron back around '84 and was in awe. I've been playing ED since the betas on dual 24" then triple monitor Eyefinity with dual R9 290s. I ordered the Rift DK2 direct from Oculus and was very pleasantly surprised to get it just two days later here in the UK.

I'm utterly utterly blown away at Elite:Dangerous with the Oculus Rift; just can't get over how amazing it is. Compared to playing on triple flatscreens it's like dating dating Susan Boyle all your life then marrying a supermodel! I was hoping it would be good but just stunned at how it really gave the impression of being in the cockpit.. And you can even get up and walk around the Cobra bridge!!

Well done Frontier.. Boyhood dream of piloting a lifelike Cobra mk3 is about as real as it's possible to get and way beyond expectation. Thank you.

Just wish I could buy and plug in another Rift and take friends/family (who are probably unlikely to play) on a tour of some of the amazing sites In the galaxy I've seen... Most would be in awe.

Once you Rift, you'll never drift.

Seriously though it's like parenthood. People just do not understand until they experience it.

I'll second that. Even third it. I have these conversations constantly in my group Teamspeak; people telling me that the OR is worse that a 4K monitor, that text is barely legible, that TrackIR is just as good, etc. The few of us who have Rifts must sound like condensending douches when we just reply that "you just won't understand until you try it"...

Agreed, it truly is a incredible experience

I even hooked my dad up to it who is 74 and has zero interest in computer games, he spent the next 30 mins in the training missions (no way was he touching my Cobra) listening to the words of how amazing it was and couldn't believe how far technology and games have come on.

He eventually pealed himself out of my seat, went home a preceded to ramble on to my mam about rift this and rift that :D

That's exactly why Oculus Rift will be a though sell and therefore stay a niche product. You just cannot describe the senstation in a meaningful way to others. Instead everybody just sees pictures of how stupid people look wearing it.
Plus the issue with motion sickness. Half of my friends won't even watch 3D movies because they make them sick. And I've seen even some 3D enthusiasts becoming sick after just 5 minutes in the Rift.

You can do this:

https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php?t=43396 (adjust for DK2 resolution)

and then just stick the headset on your friend/family and fly them around while you use the mirrored monitor. It's fun cos you have to tell them "look to the left a sec, so I can plot our journey" and they enjoy that!

Trust me, it's not going to be a tough sell. They've got the world convinced that the Rift is actually BETTER than it is. Not the other way round. Whenever I tell my friends or people in forums, or anyone for that matter, that I don't think the rift is ready, they get ANGRY at me. Like it's my fault that the perfect-world-bubble of the Rift that they've been sold is going to pop and it was my fault.

agree with you guys...i don't like Elite so much as a game, in fact i haven't even started to progress in the game as i don't have time nor will to grind, but i immensely enjoy just travelling from system to system as a tourist. It just is incredible.

Will give it a try thanks... I do really love the idea of having someone sit in the co-pilot seat in the cobra with an independent view though.. Imagine how Frontier could show the game off at all sorts of events with their own Elite 'Stig' pilot taking them on a wild ride :)

Tried the Rift for the first time on Thursday, by borrowing one from a colleague. On Friday, I offered to buy it off him - and since he doesn't use it, he agreed :D

Never experienced anything quite like it. Totally renewed the game for me, even the most routine of journeys now feels like an epic alternative life. Commercial version of the Rift will now be a day one purchase for me.

Absolutely agree. When I got it I was prepared for a let-down because of the low resolution but it turned out it doesn't bother me as much as expected. Of course higher resolution would still be very welcome.

That would be awesome. But for that you'd probably need an extra graphics card or even an extra PC as both views need to get rendered independently.

Not everyone likes it....

Not everyone has to get it.....

Not everyone can see through and focus through (ie ignore) the whole SDE thing.

People pay oooodles of money on GPUs and CPUs and RAM to remove jaggies and simply cannot get past the whole resolution thang...

But if you can - if you can simply look past and through those things, it completely and utterly changes the experience.....a truly wonderous world awaits...

I really enjoy the Rift, yet it has been tried by a friend (who's opinion I trust and respect) and he just didn't like the what he saw - what he 'felt' was good and he really enjoyed the immersion bit - but let us just remember that even people that do try the Rift, sometimes don't like it....

Nosh

I think you are making quite a point.
My impression is that computer savvy, "nerds" type (no pun intended, im in the category...) can potentially not like the rift as it is low resolution bla bla bla, as they're used to tweak their PCs to the ultimate component and driver.
But, the experience is so game changing that it can open the world of gaming to a whole lot of people who simply don't enjoy playing a game in front of a monitor.
I had a few friends for dinner lately, we're all in our mid thirties, im the only "tech" video game guy. I made my friends try Assetto Corsa, they never play videogames and use PCs only for work. Lawyers / Bankers types. They were initially making fun of me ("still playing video games?!"), then they tried...we spent the next hour with them shouting and screaming, like "this is incredible" "unbelivable" "ill spend the next 3 weeks talking about this"...we made the wives go through a demo and they were just amazed too. Needless to say...no one even mentioned words like "resolution", "frame rate" or the likes. It was like showing fire at Neanderthal men...

We're clearly at the beginning: it's a mess to setup, its not average-joe friendly, a lot of techical limitations, etc...but this to me reminds of the first cellular phones, they were suitcases...

I think you are making quite a point.......

Just simply that not everyone likes it - or will like it.....and that is seasoned gamers (like my friend who I mentioned above) or even my two savvy daughters (19 and 23 respectively) who do not like it either.....

My wife thinks I am a saddo (although, to be fair, she has felt like that for a number of years - mostly from when I discovered GPL and league racing!)

I could NOT (and will not) ever go back to triple monitors to play IRacing or Assetto Corsa or Elite Dangerous - the DK2 (in my opinion) is that good.....

But, hey - it is ok.

Its up to them....you know, the people who don't like it, or get it.....

That's all I am trying to say...

When I finally wander downstairs after a session of Elite Dangerous on the Rift, and my SO asks the inevitable "where have you been ?", instead of "upstairs on the computer" the natural, truthful response, is "Bounty hunting in my Asp in Alliance space". Because I totally feel like that's where I just was :D
