Elite and the storyline of the Barnacles : the human greatness in action

Hail Commanders,

during the Gamescom 2016, we recieved a lot of informations, but also some strange en encrypted videos, where we saw unfamiliar things. And following that, a lot of people decided to interpret what they saw, and it quickly turned into a common "War is coming", or "Thargoïds are coming".

Therefore, I hope there are still some clever people who'll try to think about what they see, instead of preparing for battle.

The following massive text was written by MisterPsit, a french streamer I respect a lot, where he gives an objective opinion of what he saw, according to the Lore of Elite, and where he calls for reflexion. I really loved it when I read it, and I asked for his permission to translate it in English and to post it on the forum. Thus, there might be some mistakes, I hope you'll be indulgent.

Take time to think about it.
Fly Safe !

Elite and the storyline of the Barnacles : the human greatness in action

We all knew humans were not necessarily crafty, but we could have hoped that in around 3330, they would have learnt from their past.

First of all, let's talk about the legendary curiosity of those good guys. We see something, we don't understand it, so we're going to do our best to explain it. It's normal. The humankind is made in such a way that he HAS to understand. This curiosity could be a real inner strength, if only it wasn't linked to some quirks, and if that curiosity wasn't deeply sick in half of the cases. But we're coming to think about that.

One day, in the year of our Lord 3301, we have found a sort of unfamiliar artefact, floating into space. It was clearly an unknown technology. Well. First instinct: “HOW MUCH IS IT WORTH ?!” Aah, see how greedy humans are... “QUICK, QUICK ! Must sell that thing to a station !” Obviously, smarter people decided to test things on it... naturally. We want to know. And indeed, they understood, by dint of perseverance, that those purring “artefacts” were pointing toward Merope, and were scanning our ships. Of course, in a set a tests, we broke some of them, “to see how they go BOOM, or if something/someone will get out of this or not”.

Following that point, come the breakdowns of some stations… the stations where we sold those beautiful unfamiliar things. “I don’t see what could have gone wrong !”.Then the quest changes , we have to bring back as much artefacts as we can and give them to scientists, in order to fix the breakdowns. This didn’t really work. But well, it’s not our fault, is it ? Artefacts broke our stations ! (just in casewe started to have doubts on our responsibilities… It would’ve been so sad if we’ve ripped the space-time continuum).

Moreover, CMDR Octo (a great explorator I respect a lot, who’s hard-headed) has managed to achieve the impossible : find a Barnacle. A bit too much confident in the humankind, he did that on stream. And guess what ? “We can target those tentacles ?! BUT ! It means we can shoot on them ?!” said many viewers. Great pilgrimage, everyone breaks everything, it’s jubilant, and here again “I don’t see what could go wrong”. Hum, okay. Effectively, we gathered Meta-Alloys, able to repair our stations, by destroying those Barnacles. It’s all good.Having said that, if I were human, I wouldn’t have taken the risk to hit something that beyonds me. Just imagine if this stuff had reacted violently. It could have been such as slapping an hibernating bear in the nose. You know that if you awake him you’re potentially dead.

Here, I’ll do a little break, and I’ll ask you to think (yes, I’m convinced you can). Don’t see the world as a linear genuineness. Future isn’t unique, there are many of them. In fact, there are probably an infinity of them, as many pathways we can imagine, where each single action affects and determines the way we’ll choose to follow.Have that in mind, and ask yourself : if we didn’t start fiddling with the artefacts, to bring them back to our stations, what would have happened ? Sadly we can’t know (anymore). Our actions did that we maybe missed out great things. Or maybe nothing at all. Too focused on a self-centered vision, we wanted to rush into things. Human, if we look at the level of the Universe and the Time, is nothing. We could have taken the time to see if anything could have come from those “Artefacts”.

Now, let’s get to things we are sure about:

  • If we chose not to touch those artefacts, they could have, at worst, scanned the ships going by. They wouldn’t have seen any threat from us.
  • Our stations wouldn’t have broken down, so no urgent and destructive need to wreck the Barnacles to fix stations.

------------------------------------------------------------------

But all of that happened, and it’s in our back now, we can’t act on it anymore. Obviously, humans won’t apply some self-analysis on those past events, it’s normal. It’s kinda hard to challenge all that kind of things. Let’s turn towards Future.

We know that, on August 28th, something important will take place. Certainly a meeting, with maybe the source of those strange beacons and artefacts. We are told that a “war” is coming, we are shown images of a ruined Cobra Mk.III in the middle of a field of wrecks, with some strange approaching things.

Stay lucid. Don’t let yourself get carried away by fanaticism. Learn from your past mistakes. It’s quite simple to take pictures out of their context, and to make you swallow them. Who told you that this Cobra and his “buddies” didn’t try to destroy these “unknown things”, which were trying to defend themselves. Who told you that these things didn’t come AFTER a conflict, and aren’t trying to help out ? Nothing at all. We have no guarantee. Develop your critical judgment. Wait for facts.
I friendly remind you that a group of humans, somewhat warlike, owns alien technology, and is looking for, of the latter, creating a conflict between humans and aliens. That would stick to the Diamondback we glimpsed, strangely moving towards a station, as if it was equipped with some advanced technologies.

That’s it ? You start to understand ?

Humans are beings frightened by what they don’t understand. When you’re frightened, you become confused, you imagine the worse, “to get ready”, and by doing so, you bring the worse about. It’s a bit like Anakin in your cinema culture. He sees that Padme is going to die, and he will do everything he can to prevent her death and WHAM, he becomes the cause of her death. Funny, isn’t it ? Funny to see how you can easily get influenced.

------------------------------------------------------------------

One last point. For you who read me, you who think “being no one in the Elite Game”, and as a result your mind has no value. Don’t listen to those pretentious men who’ll come and tell you that you have no right to express yourself, or that your words aren’t worth as much as big groups words. Some great scientists, like Tesla, have often been looked down. For all that, they were not necessarily wrong. Get the courage of your own opinion. Don’t let yourself be pushed around, and don’t be forced to swallow the thoughts some people will shout in your ears. In fact, a bit like what I’m doing right now. Before being “The Great Guys” they actually are, they were like you and me. And you, you might be able to be one day greater than they are. But don’t look for glory. Seek the truth. Because there’s not just one, but several alternatives, depending on our actions... as proved our last exchange with Thargoïds (“blah blah blah Frontier have said they changed the Lore, and my Mom cooked the custard…” Okay, Jean Gavroche, but this is not a reason for us to around one more time, you don’t know what they’ve changed, precisely).

The conclusion to all of this, is that we have no clue of what will happen. Basically, we’ve acted humanely, by wrecking, of course, by taking off, and by seizing goods that were not ours. It will soon be time to take on our acts, but there’s still a way to avoid to have Humans being seen as barbarians. Think about that. Wait and see. Don’t try to rush into things as a hot-headed Anakin falling into the sand (
http://tinyurl.com/zuu32z6). Otherwise, you’ll rush right into what you want to avoid. If it’s not done yet.

A form of wisdom would be to stay in our place. The Galaxy isn’t ours. We share it with other species. Haven’t we done enough mistake on Earth ?

Hello Commander,

Thanks for the translation, very much appreciated.
I must say that it is, in my humble opinion, waaaayyy too soon to affirmate anything on the nature of the "source" of these messages.
Must agree with what you said.

Well, you can't really send something like a UA, UP, or Barnacle our way and *not* expect us to poke it with a laser or ten just to see what it does.

If they're going to be all sore about it and come at us guns blazing instead of trying to talk first, we'll have no choice but to respond with the Universal Language(tm) until they are willing to stand down and utilize more effective means of communication. It's not our fault they couldn't be bothered to ask nicely.

Speak softly and carry a big stick, of course, but when the speaking stops sometimes you have to swing the stick. And if it comes down to that, we'll be ready.

This is what it is said in the message, it is a typical reaction, I think what the fr streamer wanted to say was, for once, to act differently, to see what could have happened. Since, technically, it's not wrong that it was our curiosity that push us to "experiment" on these UA, UP etc. What if it was a test ? Meh. We can't be sure about anything, but for now, nothing of these UA UP etc were agressive to us... Perhaps I'm wrong, I don't know...

(I've been spitballing this theory around for awhile and wasn't sure where to put it down. Please excuse my diversion; it is at least barnacle-related.)

Like many others around the time of the Maia CG, I participated in barnacle hunting, shooting the bright green barnacle flowers off their extruded pseudopod limbsto harvest meta-alloys and other rare materials. The barnacles are undoubtedly organic, yet utilise the exposed mineral outcrops in their habitat to accumulate metal deposits in their spikes, culminating in the meta-alloys found in mature barnacle flowers.

Originally I thought the barnacles were a clever product of bio-engineering by an alien race, utilised for the purpose of mining just as we set automated mineral extractors on planet surfaces. But the more I thought about it, the more another possibility presented itself. There are creatures on Earth that utilise metals and minerals within their bodies for their own purposes. Molluscs utilise dissolved calcium in seawater to secrete their calcium carbonate shells, and the Brazilian wandering spider even utilises metal ions within its fangs.

The Gamescom visual tease of destroyed ships with something large and bright green looming up in the foreground to me resembles nothing so much as large barnacle flowers. I believe that we have been unwittingly harvesting the larvae of a spacefaring barnacle/starfish species as it secretes the hard metallic outer shelly casing and limbs it would need to survive space travel.

But we only did it because we needed those meta-alloys – we had to. The Unknown Artefacts were both the cause and clue to solving the problem of UA-bombed station damage. The UA's pointing to Merope was the clue, where persistent barnacles were found and harvested in great numbers. These same technologically advanced UA's were also monitoring our ships, encoding our ship lines in audio bursts that could be decoded only through technological means.

I propose that we were lured to Merope to kill the barnacle larvae by a third alien race(one with extraordinarily advanced technology) and provided with an urgently compelling reason to do so. And since the release of the Mycoid virus in times past provides a compelling motive for an alien race to take revenge on humans, I'm not ashamed to blame Thargoids.

But why lure humanity to kill barnacles? I believe this was done to enrage the adults into defending their larvae, and therefore to strike against us. The Thargoids wouldn't even have to lift a finger. So I'll be lining my helmet with tinfoil and keeping a watchful eye out for angry green glowing space starfish. Fly safe, Commanders.

In fact, we have to put things into perspective for a second, and wait quielty to see what will happen, without imposing an opinion based on nothing...

We can of course try to guess what will come next, but without forgetting that no one knows the plain truth. An opinion must stay as a a free interpretation, and not as a personnal conviction.

And sadly, I see a lot of people taking up arms to "get ready", instead of just having a look on the events, to see if they really have to...

What if the game's been keeping track on every individual who's ever 'killed' a barnacle? 'Congrats, you're added to our kill list!'

The hunt begins aug 28 just got a new meaning...XD

Fun fact about this streamer : it has been more than once that he call for event, waayy before it happened. Recently, he told us to look for "Raxxla", something like one or two week ago. He keeps his strange smile when we ask him where it is. He seems to know a lot, yet he doesn't brag about it and he decided to, I quote "stay in the shadow, don't want my name highlighted, so I won't go on forum and reddit. Just, think about what I told you. It would be nice if we found Raxxla, soon."
And now, there is this new on GalNET. I must say this streamer is strange, I'm almost sure he knows more that what he wants to tell us haha !
Therefore, I'll keep his caution in a corner of my head...

EDIT : I remember that before we found Barnacle and when we were looking for the meaning of UA, he was telling us that "Merope might be a good place to take vacation, don't you think ? Far from the star, obviously". He keeps telling us that Merope was a good place.
I'm quite lost about this actually. He seems to really know a lot and he just keeps watching and not acting. Strange.
