Elite Books - which ones?

I got an Amazon Kindle for Christmas from Santa, and I'm looking to download the Elite books that are official and carry some of the lore.

Which of the books should I get, and is there any particular order I should read them in?

I would recommend 'Reclamation' and 'Premenition', both by Drew Wagar (in that order). I also enjoyed 'And Here the Wheel' by John Harper and 'Mostly Harmless' by Kate Russell (no particular order for these).

Cheers,
Andy

I'm currently reading Out of The Darkness by T. James, and can recommend it. The story feels alive, and pages fly by. While set in the Elite universe, the novel builds upon it, and isn't strictly bound to game experiences reader might have. There is little background for some permit locked systems, and references to some very recent game events. I still have some 150 pages left so i won't reveal too much about it, but i'll tell it's definitely about thargoids.

Here's my top list;-

1. Elite Anthology : Tales from the Frontier - 15 Short Stories from many authors organised by Chris Booker *
2.= Elite : Reclamation - Drew Wagar *
2.= Lave: Revolution - Allen Stroud
4. Elite : Premonition - Drew Wagar
5. Mostly Harmless - Kate Russell *
6. Legacy - Michael Brookes
7. Out of the Darkness - T. James (Interesting one that has thargoids but don't know if the Cannon's been retconned).
8. Docking is Difficult - Gideon Defoe (Really enjoyed it until the last couple of chapters, otherwise it would be higher on the list)
9. Wanted - Gavin Deas
10. Nemorensis - Simon Spurrier (Not one to read to the kids as a bed time story but the idea behind it is interesting)
11. Elite : And here the wheel - John Harper (Space Kilts). *

I've changed the list alittle since the last one because I'm re-reading them but if you get the Chance, Get the Audio books. Those are amazing.

* Have Audio Books.

I have to admit that I am not a book reader (I blame English classes at school!), but yesterday I purchased the audio book version of Reclamation. I wasn't sure on what to expect, but I have to say that I have been pleasantly surprised by the content and I am intrigued to listen to more (currently chapter 7). I would now definitely purchase Premonition if it were to be released in the same format.

Premonition is a worthy sequel, and if you enjoyed the characters in the first one, most of them make a return. There are a few things I don't like about it, but I can't say it here without spoiling the story for you.

My favourite of the ones I've read so far is And Here The Wheel. In fact I've read it three times now. And it's the only one I've read that manages to avoid the stereotypical "sexy lady sells sci-fi books to blokes" approach. "Space kilts" doesn't do it justice, I'm not sure we were reading the same book!

Reclamation wasn't as good as I expected it to be after all the hype. I've not got around to reading Premonition yet.

Docking is difficult is a nice break because it is funny, reflecting a part of the ED universe that does still have a sense of humour. Note this also avoids the "sexy lady" stereotype.

Wanted had the most interesting ideas for ship modules and space phenomena of the books I've read so far.

Nemorensis started terribly but improved.

Legacy was alright, but didn't leave enough mystery and intrigue as I was expecting, considering it is the "official novella" of ED and should therefore stand shoulder to shoulder with The Dark Wheel, Imprint, Stories of Life on the Frontier and Further Stories of Life on the Frontier.

Mostly Harmless was fine, but I think there are many possible plot lines that could have been explored but weren't, therefore I was left a bit disappointed.

All the rest are still on my reading list unfortunately.
