I don't think the Frontier comics would be considered canon as they weren't created by or on behalf of Frontier Developments/David Braben/Ian Bell.

You're probably right.

The list of Comics:

Frontier Elite #01 by DJ COMICS.
Frontier Elite #02 by DJ COMICS.
Frontier Elite #03 by DJ COMICS.
Frontier Elite #04 by DJ COMICS.

Michael Brookes

Game Director
Note that some details are changing (for example the universe of the original game was very different to the later games), so while a source may be considered 'canon', things have changed.

Michael

So I assume that the universe, star systems and planets will be more like FFE and ELITE 2 then ELITE. Also I presume that story and time line will continue from FFE?

The galaxy will resemble to real galaxy more than FFE did.
Michael

I hear that the quest for an accurate galactic model is causing a few cannon issues between the games, some systems in FFE are in totally the wrong place. I'm following all the writers updates and Drew mentioned having to relocate his story for that and other reasons.

I understand a lot of the details need to be kept secret right now, everything is a long way from nailed down and you need to weigh the commercial concerns of those who bought the writers packs but are there any plans to go public with details as they are finished, or will we need to wait for the publication of a writers guide to the elite universe once the game is released?

from my own point of view I feel i can capture the flavor of the game-world in my book but there comes a point when not knowing things like the specifications of the Long range Cobra and other starter ships makes it impossible to continue the story.

Most of us are writing on the basis of maybe having to amend things later. Little details like that are just impossible to nail down so early, and may even change after release for rebalancing. Also it's best to be vague about such things in the story and concentrate on character interactions instead. Write for what suits the story, and worry about little details later.

Is the Imperial/Federal/Independent structure considered canon ?. I am hopeful that Imperial and Federal factions will remain in the new game as i am working on some written material involving Imperial characters.
DB mentioned the differences in Imperial and Federal ethos in the Elite universe on You tube , but i can't find it.

A capital ship is comparable to a carrier or destroyer or something?.

I'd say that's a yes:

We started the process by identifying the type of ship we wanted. For the initial release we plan on just including a few of these titans, so we wanted ships that were general purpose, in naval parlance this usually means cruisers. Traditionally cruisers are ships that are designed to operate independently. In the Elite universe this means that they are capable of going toe to toe against each other as well as acting as fleets or assault carriers.

Edit: I'd love to know what FD plan on naming these types of ship, Constellation Class Heavy Cruiser anyone? Goes without saying it's a Federation vessel. ;)

<nods> Off the top of my head, capital ships would have originally been ships-of-the-line (i.e. battleships). That term extends to carriers now (and others), and cruisers have replaced battleships as the most powerful naval ships.

<heads for the Wiki to check>

You are missing three in addition to the three books from Gollancz and the Official Sequel to the Dark Wheel by Michael.

Commander Boz: Author of "The Cost of Exploration"
Andre Czausov: Author of "Supermassive:
(an Elite universe novel)"
John Harper: Author of "And Here the Wheel"

Carrier = yes. Destroyer = no.
A destroyer (also corvettes and frigates) used to be an escort and would not be defined as capital ship.
A carrier, absolutely.

Now days things have changed, and Destroyers are probably something in between.

I haw added some more titles. Thanks to Darren Grey and Gimi.

Jameson/Jones: Supermassive - an Elite: Dangerous novel by André Czausov
The Cost of Exploration - Commander Boz's Book by Chad Baxter
And Here The Wheel by John Harper
Elite: Dangerous - Space Storm

slight error there, John Harper's book is called '...And here the Wheel'

Space Storm isn't an official canon book so shouldn't be included in the list, especially credited to someone other than myself ;)
