Elite Dangerous - A journey and Experience Like No Other - A Photographic Log

Hi all,

Let me begin by saying I'm mostly a lurker here on the forums; I visit here most days but rarely post. I've been playing Elite Dangerous since the early days of Beta and I truly adore this game.

In August I set out for Sagittarius A like many others have done before me, not fully realising how long it would take to journey to the core and back again. I arrived back at the 'bubble' last week and would like to share some 'photos' of my trip. I'm a keen photographer and one of the many things I love about Elite is the stunning vistas one can stumble across whilst traversing the fabulous galaxy Frontier have created for us. Ever since I began playing this game back in late 2014 I've been astounded by the visual and audio spectacle that is Elite Dangerous.

I'm an explorer at heart and spent much of my journey trying to find and take screens of particularly striking scenes. I certainly don't do exploration for the money... for the time and effort spent, I could easily have made much more doing trading or combat. But that's missing the point. I've read numerous threads stating that E: D is a grind and have always found these threads a little bewildering (for me personally). I play (or experience) E: D because of its ambition, its sense of scale and the immersion it creates. No other game I've played provides me with such a sense of wonderment and awe.

For me this game is almost cathartic, a place where I can lose and immerse myself in its beauty. I posted a thread way back in Beta thanking Frontier for what they had created, showing some screenshots of the sights I'd experienced back then (Eta Cephai!!!... alas, no more). A forum member named Nexxo commented on that thread "Not so much a game as a transcendental experience." and I couldn't agree more.

It's strange, in my real life photography I'm always looking for calm and tranquil scenes. It's great that in my favourite 'game' I can find and experience the same. Thank you Frontier for not only a great gaming experience but what I would also consider a work of art.

I'm away visiting family at the moment so have been unable to try out the Horizons beta. I'm sure there are many other splendid sights to see on my return home.

I used various graphics mods throughout my 4 month expedition. Some of the shots from my travels are below:

Wow, really amazing pics! Thanks for that!

I am still out there in my exploring toon, haven't had the chance to play for a while (busy IRL), but looking forward to coming back and continuing my exploration, sitting near the southern edge of the galaxy currently, then want to follow that arm in to the centre... :)

P.S. just saw your other flickr albums too, you got a lot of nice pics :)

That's great.

I play with the Oculus Rift so I'll never get to play with the visual quality you have because I had to tone down everything to its lowest setting.

But I remember once while I was flying away from a station and trying to get around a planet, I was in the Cobra and I looked to my right, and saw a scene like your 13th picture, but the planet was earth like and the sun was rising. What I saw was the empty pilot's chair to the right of me, and from the cockpit window was the sun "rising" over that planet.. and it was so beautiful.. even at the lowest setting. I kept looking at the empty seat and almost motioned for my wife to come here into the cockpit and share the view me but I was in the Oculus Rift and I could never share that experience with anyone else =( That image is still in my mind and I don't think I'll ever forget it. Maybe when I try to make my own trip to Sagittareus A I will first figure out how to record from the Oculus.

But great pics Hopp, glad you enjoyed your trip

Very cool shots OP. I think you are right. In many ways Elite is a work of art. R+ for you and the best of luck to you on your long journeys

masCh, I normally use OR too, but for part of my exploration trip I switched back to my normal screen, just to see the scenes in all their beauty.

But recently I managed to set up my output for a second window on my monitor, on which I can record videos or screenshots, check out this thread: https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php?t=43396

Great pics.

What's wrong with the OR graphics? I'm itching to get one once it hits retail but I really don't want a bad graphical experience... Can you elaborate ?

Nice pics - too bad they need the heavy post-processing/Mods to come out like that.

Those are some impressive shots! Isn't it great to be out there? :) I can't wait to get out there again, this time with a buggy in my Asp Scout hangar.

Great pics and congrats on making it back to the bubble. +1 rep

FYI if you didn't know there is a dedicated "Explorers" forum...not that you shouldn't post here, but you may find some interesting threads there as well.

Well the current version of the OR (ie the DK2) theoretically has 1920x1080 resolution, that means 960x1080 per eye, also due to the way the pixels are arranged text which is not green is harder to read, and generally (due to the fact that you are quite close to the "screen" and have a higher FOV) it looks more pixellated. Therefore it won't look as nice as for example in the above screenshots. Also it has fairly high hardware requirements to run it smoothly and at high settings. While there is already a newer version of the SDK out, and also Nvidia's support for SLI for VR, ED is still using an older version of the SDK (ie no SLI support).

Don't get discouraged by that though, the immersion is still amazing, and I wouldn't go back (*) - you are really IN the spaceship, and I love it :)

(*) I am mostly doing exploration without the VR because I use a couple of tools (like EDDiscovery, Captain's log etc) to record where I am going and collect statistics etc..

Gotcha. Makes sense, I have still yet to try one...

Great shots!

Regardless of the reduced resolution... Oculus or Vive is still the ultimate way to experience Elite. The cockpits look like flat miniature cardboard designs on a conventional display. Before I got my DK2 I was playing Elite with my 3d Vision 2 glasses. That's 1080 per eye. Depth was good and the cockpits looked at least a bit more realistic but still everything in miniature.

VR changes all that. I sometimes sit around an icy asteroid field and look at the giant floating rocks around me.

That's great.

That sounds truly wonderful and I can only imagine how immersive it all feels with the Oculus Rift. Maybe one day I will take the plunge into VR... not sure if my wife would be too happy :)

It says a lot for a game that after a year of playing it still manages to stir the same feeling of amazement that I had on day one.

Indeed, I'll be able to try out the Horizons beta later on tonight when I travel back home, can't wait!
