Elite Dangerous base game has sold 3.5 million copies (plus other FDev games have sold well too)

All four games, Elite Dangerous, Planet Coaster, Jurassic World Evolution and Planet Zoo, have each provided significant revenue contributions in FY20 through both base game sales and paid-downloadable content ("PDLC"). Frontier's most recent game, Planet Zoo, which was released in November 2019 and is Frontier's biggest PC launch to date, has been particularly well received. In early May 2020 cumulative base game unit sales of Planet Zoo crossed the 1 million mark, less than six months after release and several months ahead of any of Frontier's previous game releases on PC.
Our other games have also recently crossed sales milestones. During April Elite Dangerous exceeded the 3.5 million base game unit threshold and in March Jurassic World Evolution passed 3 million base game units sold. In January, Planet Coaster crossed 2.5 million base game units.

Congrats to everyone at FDev o7

So it seems that their marketing strategy of releasing Fleet Carrier Beta 1 with ridiculous and unbearable requirements worked well after all...
Probably not, at least not if "bringing in lots of new accounts" was the aim (which I'm not sure it was)

The first four years after release they sold on average 0.75M base game units a year (so ~Jan 2015-Jan 2019, ignoring the relatively small number of pre-release sales) at a roughly constant rate. Only another 0.5M in the next 16 months suggests a much slower rate for 2019 and 2020. Not unexpected, perhaps, but still a change.

The big question - which won't be answered in their public statements for another couple of years - is whether Elite Dangerous 4.0 brings in lots of new base game sales as well, or whether the game moves into being funded primarily by existing players buying expansions.

3.5 million copies of ED seems rather low, to be frank.
I recall the milestones upon release, where Frontier calculated with abt. 5 mil copies after the first 3 (or 4) years.
ED seems a long way behind that original goal.

Interesting and no doubt explains F D focus :

In March Jurassic World Evolution passed 3 million base game units sold - took five months

In January, Planet Coaster crossed 2.5 million base game units - two and a half years?

In April Elite Dangerous exceeded the 3.5 million base game unit threshold - took five and a half years

EDIT - real brain-fade there, totally borked that post but still:

Jurassic World Evolution launched almost two years ago in June 2018.
Planet Coaster launched three-and-a-half years ago in November 2016.

I prefer to congratulate someone on a job well done rather than well sold.

We now live in a world where you can pick up the base game in a Steam Sale for the price of a pack of paint jobs
