Elite dangerous boxed edition....was there...now its not.

Hi guys.

Probably sick of hearing this, but as a slow connection user I was very pleased to see the full version released as a boxed edition, and now it appears to have just gone.

Have you pulled the plug on this idea? Is this just temporary? Will there be a full boxed edition available to buy? Was getting pretty excited to order this for xmas and I'd really rather not use my 15GB a month data limit on downloading the game leaving me without internet for a month.

I'm sorry and I know some of you hardcore users are gonna slam me with "get with the times and get a broadband connection" but I'm afraid I don't have that luxury, I'm a traveller, not a "commit to a 12 month contract and therefore keep my ass in one place" kinda guy.

Also if you're thinking boxed equals being able to play offline, that is not possible anymore. Offline mode was canceled a few weeks ago; you will need an internet connection to play this game.

Edit: nevermind, I guess you were just talking about the ability to download the game itself.

I've got an internet connection, i'm happy to play it online, just not happy to waste my data on downloading the gazillion gig file or however much it is.

The boxed edition has a DVD with the game and FD have an understandable challenge getting that DVD to at least have the 1.0 version of the production game due to be downloadable Dec 16th, so the original 'availability date' of 16th Dec for the BOXED edition was unrealistic. Perhaps currently the full box delivery date is looking like it is AFTER the holidays, so FD have quietly withdrawn it from sale. I ordered it a while ago (as a gift, highly risky...) and FD have sent me a 'registration code' that will enable any new account to download and play the game, so at the very least I can 'gift' that (but I haven't quite had my full-box money's worth yet... it's fine for me though).

As per https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php?t=69310

Also ED is less than a 3Gb *install*. The download is less than that. Unlike certain other space games in development it won't kill your download quota.

Even if you have the boxed edition you'll have to download a new version regularly. Everyone needs to have the same version when playing online. Once you get the boxed version, install it and click on play, be prepared to download the updates.

Boxed set is now an upgrade to the download

To be absolutely clear... there were two boxed sets: (1) Upgrade, (2) Full.

(1) The 'upgrade' is tied to the account you bought it with, that account needs to have an existing paid-for licence for E : D, and you install the software via a download as usual.

(2) The 'full boxed' is no longer (presumably temporarily) on sale. It's intended to come with the game on DVD, but this will delay it. It also comes with (came with) a giftable 'key' to download the software.

The main purpose of both boxes is really to provide manuals and other items as physical copy, because as is often repeated, the game requires an active internet connection and you will be downloading updates etc regardless of whether you started with a DVD or not...

The link to the "Upgrade Edition" is here: https://store.elitedangerous.com/usd/elite-dangerous-boxed-upgrade.html

But I'm very concerned about the contents (Or lack thereof):
"Contents Include
• Elite: Dangerous full game on DVD (requires online connection)
• Quick Start Manual
"

I know it's only another $20 bucks (USD). But to get *ONLY* the game on DVD and a 'Quick Start Manual'?!?!? That can't be it from the game that started the whole "Everything and more comes in the box" craze! If it's the proper Elite Box, then $20 is waaaaaaay too cheap for that. So I am deeply concerned.

Elite was one of the few games that made opening the box like christmas! I want to buy the box so bad, but after already being some cash in, if all I'm gonna get is a DVD and Quick-Start guide (Which quite frankly, I've we've already been testing the game for months, is going to tell us what, exactly?) errrr... I dunno about this one.

If it had a 'BackStory' or 'Universe' Quick-Start, that'd be waaaay-worth it since those details have been, quite frankly, absent and/or elusive. But these details should be in game, or at least a movie when you create your commander to give us... *BACKSTORY*. (Sigh).

Does anyone have any more detail on 'What's in the box'? If it's just a DVD / Pamphlet... Well...

There is a boxed set from the Kickstarter packed with goodies; but the boxed set being advertised now is a quickstart manual and disk.
