Elite Dangerous Concerned

Hello one and all.

So now that our kickstarter goal is getting closer and closer, and the reality that we will get this funded is starting us in the face. What do you think of the time frame the Devs have given themselves. Doesn't seem like a very long time. A year and a few months to make a cool polished game sounds very optimistic. I understand it can be expanded upon with updates but I hate the whole idea of getting a game out as quickly as possible and then fixing it with patches.

Thing is I can't remember that last time Frontier actually released a game of any note. Kinectamals doesn't count.

Any one else share my concerns?

Frontier are not new to making games, and they know what they can and can't achieve. SO if they say they can release what they are happy with, then I trust them. They know better than me.

I know that they are not new at making games, but looks at outlander, that was in development for year and ended up just getting binned. Personally I think Frontier NEED this game to get back on track and get a reputation again, a reputation for excellence. This is their chance, lets hope they nail it.

I think a reasonable amount has been done over the years on a low key basis whether the outsiders game engine has been used would possibly make a big difference.

They have been working on this for a long time already and many of the CORE technologies needed are already in place as David Braben has said so it should not be a problem for an experience company like Frontier. :)

I'm not quite sure why FD's Kinect games shouldn't count. For what they are, they seem to be pretty well received, and they have a very professional polish.

At the end of the day, being a business, FD make the games publishers are willing to pay them to make. So far as I can tell, aside from one game that unfortunately was cancelled, there have been no problems with them achieving what they set out to do.

I sure hope so, I just want them to nail it Styggron and put all the naysayers in their place, I want them to do it right so much!

I agree but the same company made this kick starter a lot harder than it had to be with such a poor start but they got their act together pretty quick. If they do the same with the game and listen to the feedback they get then I am confident that they will do it.

Hopefully they employ some decent program, managers and they are honest when things start to slip. Got to be positive and give them the chance to prove it.

I think what they will be delivering is a fairly basic game and as such will have enough time. They have to make money somehow so presumably big chunks of the game will come later. I would even suggest that we won't see all the features spoken of until elite dangerous 2 is released.

I think that would be asking for trouble. Any mention of a version 2 would get some pretty harsh feedback from the bigger backers. Maybe rephrase it as service pack 1?

I do agree with your point though. FD just need to be honest about what will be delivered and when. I have no reason to doubt that they won't.

I've got confidence in DB and frontier to create something special. They have already stated that planetary landings won't be in the first release but will only update the game with it when it's ready.

They have had problems with being pushed into a early release in the past and won't make the same mistake again. :D

Frontier do have a good rep for games just not PC games as it been a few good years since they made one.

They have made it clear on the KS page that this funding is for the basic or minimum game as they call it.

From where we are now, $2M/£1.25M will get us the minimum game

And they have stated that the release date of March 2014 is estimated.

I am experienced with game dev and given they have the networking code and much of the core stuff done and expansions will add later, the time frame seems fine to me. Also i think they will focus hard on it.

Hi Robot Wizard Games

Welcome to the Frontier Forum. Its nice to see a game dev on here, who can give perspective to the development process. Elite Dangerous is in good hands. David has focused on the things you don't see in the game, the engine, the network code, basically the really important nitty gritty stuff to make sure it will be a dream to play. Yes he could have focused all his energies on fancy shiny graphics, but I am glad he took the route he did as it will pay off further down the line. I would rather have something that might look a little rough around the edges but plays brilliantly rather than something beautiful that plays like a dog. Besides, shiny stuff can be added later ;)

Thanks Geraldine.

Yes with DB pushing his specialist thing with procedural generation, that will help really a lot and he is mixing it with the traditional methods to give extra variety, so that is good.

Look After The Bits And The Gigabytes Will Look After Themselves

Don't forget Mazrocks we are talking about someone who created a whole galaxy on a single double density floppy disk for FE2, a game written in assembler, with the original Elite, most emails these days are bigger than the whole game. If exploration is your thing, just imagine for a moment what could be on a couple of DvDs :D

David learned his craft in the beginning of the home computer era where you had to make the most of what meagre resources you had. I believe David still holds onto that ethos in everything he does and it will be there for all to see when Elite Dangerous appears ;)

As long as they do it right, then I'm game. Hopefully after the new year (and after funding is verified) then we will see some proper updates!!
