Some cinematic training would be good for the author, though. For example, it would be better if the opening and closing shots of leaving/entering the stations would continue in the same direction (leaving the station to the right of frame in the beginning, entering from the left) for visual continuity.
- So the shots flow from left to right as if you were reading a book. It suggests a certain kind of linearity, like the journey from birth to death. But what if I wanted to suggest that the return to the coriolis station was like a return from danger to the safety of the womb? -
Of course the above statement is all .
The reason that shot is that way round is purely because I was trying (unsuccessfully) to frame the planet nicely in the background. The shot just didn't work quite right from the other side and the composition was slightly less interesting.
If I had more time to wait around for the planets to move and have things framed differently I would have done. Unfortunately, I had a limited amount of time to get the shots I needed and three very helpful and patient commanders who also gave up their time for these shots. Organising three people to do what you want is tricky at the best of times, even more so with with 6DoF.
There was no pre-planning or storyboard, I just shot it all on the fly. The footage was shot on friday evening, and the edit done on saturday morning, I had to just make the most of the footage at hand. There are more than a few things I would like to do differently. Some shots were abandoned entirely because I couldnt fit them in, others didn't fit right or I had to kludge it to make things work, so for example...
Sure hope I can turn that fast in an anaconda someday.![]()
That shot is sped up, otherwise you would be watching that damn anaconda turn long after the music finishes. D:
The long and short of it is, shooting the footage took much much longer than editing it all together. Getting everyone back together to do endless re-shoots so I could get all the shots perfectly timed and framed would be too much to ask of anyones patience.
