Elite Dangerous Destructoid Review - 9/10

There must be some rubbish on the PS4 then! ED is good, but a 9/10 it most certainly is not IMHO.

Aren't most console games these days just the same game they released last year, but with either an incremental number. Or simply removed the number entirely? :p

I'd give ED a 9/10.

1000s of hours of fun, for around £60 now.
Has a few issues, but nothing major.

My only gripe is the game is to easy these days. Got all this Engineers content, and nothing to use it on. Lol

Not entirely fair to console games, there are some real gems out there (the Last of Us being a notable exclusive). In honesty though, my entire game collection is on PlayStation except Elite which is my only PC game.

I would probably rate ED 9/10 as well though. It is my number one game of choice, and I very rarely turn on the console unless I feel the need for a narrative driven game, or some couch co-op gaming with the Mrs

Elite Dangerous is about the only game of it's kind, especially on console, so giving 9 out of 10 isn't so hard since there's hardly any competition.
However......
If you're into this kind of game, like me, then personally I think 9 out of 10 is justified, with a side note..........fix the bugs!!

I guess after what the PS4 players went through with NMS, this must be like a breathe of fresh air.

Regardless, the reviewer is a long time Elite player. And he pretty much nailed it from every aspect in my opinion.

9/10 - 'A hallmark of excellence. There may be flaws, but they are negligible and won't cause massive damage.'

They also gave Overwatch a 10/10 and that's a grindy pile of something I can't repeat on here. Maybe they just like grind.

They also like bad games, like Halo Reach getting a 10/10 not to mention giving MGSV a 9/10 and that game was garbage.

They don't exactly offer what I would call an unbiased opinion, I wouldn't put too much stock in their reviews if I were you.

Video game reviews hardly matter anymore. Elite Dangerous had a lot of 6's and 7's at launch. games aren't just final code, ship and start working on the next one anymore. They are huge projects and the foundation is never going to be reviewed well. Whe it comes to this reviewer...Elite Dangerous a 9? I literally can't think of anyone I would recommend this game to. And keep in mind, that doesn't mean it's a BAD game.

Lets put it this way. Games are becoming almost unreviewable, and Elite Dangerous is the poster child for that.

Not to go on a tirade against gaming media, but outside some cool and specific content like Digital Foundry, all these blogs are absolute nonsense. I miss the days of gaming mags as a kid and wanting to check out the newest game. Now we have Youtube. I knew I would love Elite the second I saw Obsidian Ant on Youtube flying around a black hole. Gamespots 6 was meaningless.

There, I've rambled....Sorry.

shorter more accurate version : games are no longer fully finished and released any more. they are released half done with a release day dlc you can pay for also done - which is the reason the game isnt finished and the dlc part of it like the old days and why they need a release day patch to fix the things they should have been fixing while putting the dlc in the main game for release day. so they cant teally rely on release day ratings. they need the patches to fix the major bugs done first. was that what you meant?

I do feel that it's kind of hard to assign a fair number review to ED. For the right kind of person, it's great, for the impatient or people that just want to shoot stuff, it's lousy.

Yep, but that applies to all games though. Personally I just can't stand 3rd person games, even when they are really high quality and right up my genre. I am unsuitable to review any 3rd person game as it would never exceed a 3/10 because I have a personal bias against seeing places my eye's can't look. For example in 3rd person shooty games you can swing the camera out round the corner and you know exactly whats there without having risk revealing your position or getting shot, which I feel is cheating/too easy.

If you like gigantic space dowhateveryoulikeulators you'll take to ED like a duck to water, if you don't like that then you'll never get it. Better to have a game reviewed by someone who likes that type of game, written for people who like that type of game and score it accordingly. Otherwise you just get confused lost inaccurate feeling reviews saying how could anyone enjoy this.
