Elite Dangerous : Fruit Machine?

I'm actually a fan of the RNG mechanic, because it stops, at least in some ways the min/max issue and hopefully it will link parts of the game together with missions and make it fun and make ship builds unique. However I can't help but feel that as an *unavoidable* side effect of wanting a random elements in the game the mechanics now resemble a fruit machine.

Collect coins > Insert coins > Spin Wheels > Repeat until desired outcome or you run out of coins > Rinse and repeat.

They might do better by removing the special feature graphic that looks and sounds a bit like a fruit machine and maybe change it to some whizz, bang, crash, drill engineering sounds...

Didn't they say they had removed it since that build?

No. They removed it for things that cannot get a special feature in the first place (at least that is what they said in the stream if your information is never I retract my statement)

To TS with that title I was expecting a whiny OP full of hyperbole and exaggeration. You have surprised me. Pleasantly. Have some rep.

From what I understand from the little of seen of it, there is a chance to gain a 'special' ability. If that is the case, I'm not really a fan. If these guys are engineers, I would expect they'd know what they were doing. It would be like me taking my car in to get a service and the mechanic saying, "Well, I changed the oil. All good. Oh, and I accidentally installed a turbo! Lucky you."

I would have preferred randomness in the overall outcome. For example, the engineer might be aiming for a 10% increase in some spec, but only manages to squeeze 8% out of it.

I guess we'll see what it's like in beta.
