Which really describes Elite: Dangerous more accurately?

Definition of "Game": a form of play or sport, especially a competitive one played according to rules and decided by skill, strength, or luck.

Definition of "Simulator": a machine with a similar set of controls designed to provide a realistic imitation of the operation of a vehicle, aircraft, or other complex system, used for training purposes.

Definitely has a bit of both, I think the latter is a bit more accurate. Describing this game as Microsoft Flight Simulator, in space, with an in-game market isn't that wild of a leap.

This may explain the relatively mediocre reception on steam; if you are expecting a "game" in the traditional sense of having objectives, or goals, then that's definitely not what you're going to receive, but if you're content to just be plopped into space and just go around doing your own thing, then you'll love Elite... But I don't think FDEV was particularly honest in terms of marketing ED.

Just look at the launch trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dwvjElmFCfE Yeah... an accurate reflection of ED gameplay if I ever saw some.

And look at the "wings" trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G-4xHtCP1Yo People seeing this trailer might get the impression that Elite is a rich, cooperative multiplayer world. Lawl.

FDEV is completely full of it when it comes to their game trailers.

If this game labelled itself a "Simulator" instead of a "Game" people might have had a better idea of what they were getting themselves into.

Yeah I know this was a redundant rant. Just some thoughts.

It's a game based on a simulated model of the Milky Way. But its still a game...

Except - there is no goal, no way of measuring success, no way to win. It just is. Hmm. That doesn't work for either definition - does it.

It's a mess, and I love it?

Both. It's both. It's always been both. Will always be both. How is this not understood by now? It's a redundant rant. It's not changing; it's both.

It's actually not the game struggling to understand it is a) both or b) can be both. It's been both for > 3 years. It's commanders simply refusing to accept it's both; even though it's both. Both.
