Elite Dangerous highlights of 2016

For me the Elite Dangerous highlights of 2016 were Chiggy's rescue of Macedonia, Allitnil's 'no fuel scoop' trip from the bubble to Colonia, and the continued development of Colonia as a handy base of operations for an explorer like myself.

And from a more personal perspective I also got to co-tag 4 different ELW's with 4 different commanders.

What are your highlights?

I like all the alien stuff happening, it's setting the foundations for something cool, me thinks.

Personally, going 3000ly below the galaxy. It didn't help anyone, or advance exploration, but the feeling of doing something no one has ever done before is awesome [big grin]. That thread also taught me that if you answer every single reply it makes for a horrible reading [haha]

There's been some interesting events throughout 2016..

The Distant Worlds finale that saw almost 500 pilots of the fleet reach the far side of the galaxy (including a monumental effort by those who flew Sidewinders).
The discovery of Jaques station and the community effort to establish a colony there - something FD finally embraced.
The building of several deep space outposts way beyond human space.
The discovery of abandoned bases in the rift.
From an exploration point of view the growing number of highly organized massive expeditions that are adding a new dimension to exploration from what we saw back in 2015.
The expansion of the Galactic Mapping Project, now complete with regions, with FD beginning to incorporate some of those regions and POIs into the game. That's a great tribute from FD to the hundreds of explorers that have contributed to it since its introduction.

Lets hope 2017 continues in that vein

My one concern is that if (when) FD start to introduce Thargoids then exploration may start to involve combat. Not sure how I feel about that.

Also, fond of Jaques though I am (heck, I'm currently docked there. The coffee isn't very good) I don't want many more like it. I like the fact that when you go into the black you're on your own. I don't want a handy station every 10,000ly or so.

That being said I'm loving the game and especially the explorer community. You guys, collectively, have been my Elite highlight of 2016.

For me, it's discovering I'm more addicted to exploring than I first thought.

My "long" trip out to Colonia (and back) seems to have somehow morphed into a trip to Beagle Point

It's been a 50/50 year for me. I took a five months break in mid Distant Worlds because honking finally burned me out. I came back refreshed and was happy so many of you folks were and are still around.

My personal highlight was the first discovery of the Gates of Apzu, a 57 solar masses black hole far below the galactic plane. And I made Elite Explorer due to my Distant Worlds data.

Fittingly, I believe.

I wish us success in 3303. May the winds be at our backs!

My highlight was discovering Elite again (after Elite II from 1993) and learning the many aspects of the game.

And discovering how much I love the game and how entertaining it is!

Look forward to Elite 2017 and First Encounter!

Highlights for me:

Getting to Elite as an explorer due to DWE and Rift adventures; then clearing my save and heading out to Colonia in a Sidewinder.

Off the top of my head and avoiding all the exploration/expedition stuff (not because it wasn't nice, but we're all going to say that :p), i'd have to say Turjan's videos (which i have to catch up on, thanks for this thread reminding me about that :p).

Co-tagging some earth likes with Chiggy was a highlight, being rescued by the Fuel Rats when I had a momentary lapse 53kly from Sol was pretty cool (if slightly embarrassing). The introduction of the journals and being able to add some code to EDD to flash up surface scan info on screen without opening the sysmap was very satisfying.

If I had to pick one thing it would be the game now remembering the end point of my route and replotting it for me both between sessions and if I manually jump a star or two off to the side because I've seen something shiny.

Being part of the brilliantly-coordinated Christmas Carriers Convoy launch. All those Cmdrs in separate wings, all with their own roles - the teamwork and camaraderie was truly a thing to behold.

Doing the mass jump at the final WP of the Crab Nebula Expedition - waiting for 20 minutes to jump with 58 Cmdrs desperately hoping my game wouldn't crash and it didn't, then jumping. Was a genuine thrill.

Being part of the brilliant things happening in Colonia.

Going round the galaxy, seeing incredible things, and making Elite in exploration.

But most of all, meeting so many great people, often at random, and having friendships develop out of it. That's bloody amazing.

One word : Distant Worlds

Ok, 2 words : Distant Worlds Expedition

Sorry, ermm, three words : Distant Worlds Expedition Fun

Oh, four words : Distant Worlds Expedition Fun and Really Scary Prospect of Getting Lost and Running Out of Fuel

Crap, too many words! But I think I made my point :p
