Elite Dangerous Horizons Legacy offline mode needed

So. Legacy version is pretty offline now. Maybe it is already time to make a "snapshot" and release offline version? No discoveries transfered to "Live" galaxy, no community missons. Literally - no connections at all. Just empty liveless universe. It will give some players version that they was waiting for and you could turn off a bunch of computing resourses saving money.

What we are waiting for? The decision is obvious. Its time.

It's not offline at all, the mission servers, the BGS, Powerplay, that all still functions as it did previously, not sure where you get offline out of "no longer being updated except for critical fixes."

Actually, there's no big use in BGS and Powerplay in Legacy. It's already isolated and pretty dead now.

Actually ED:Legacy might be the product a lot of people have been waiting for if it goes Offline as loads of people play in Solo anyways.

There's one big issue with a true "offline" version, though.. All the resources needed to support the BGS, such as the database of stars, planets and moons, stations, etc. would need to live on the player's machine, instead of FDev's servers. I would imagine that the space needed for all the BGS data, in its entirety, would be somewhere close to a terabyte, possibly more. An interesting question, actually.

It would certainly stop being a living galaxy, as you would have to be in-game for the tick to actually happen.

It may be able to be pulled off, by removing all the little things that happen behind the scenes. But I think they would have to add new mechanics for an offline version to be playable in any meaningfull sense. AND all the third party tools (inara etc) is gone.

Please please please... To simulate stars and planet movement you don't need whole "server". Look at Sar Engine. They have WHOLE UNIVERSE in small size and requres simple resources. BGS and powerlpay makes sense when you play LIVE. Legacy no more LIVE

The reason Legacy mode was created was so that Frontier could avoid development effort maintaining the old code.

To create a legacy offline mode would need a whole load of extra work to change the architecture of the code, move everything to the client side and then support/fix any bugs. This is the exact opposite of what Frontier want, so is not going to happen. (I am not against the concept, there is no chance it will happen for legacy mode)

We didn't know how much work needed. Running servers also not free.

Your not going to get it. This is about the 1000 offline mode thread. Its not going to happen - based on 8 years of experience. Testme27 has it right above.

Whilst i do agree now legacy mode has been made separate from live mode there is no reason to not do it, eight years ago we all were live mode now 80% of the supported devices are legacy or canned its more of an option 😉

No, nowhere near. Stars, planets, moons - if you discount the first discovery database, which you could just say wasn't a meaningful thing in "offline" - are already stored on the local disk (or rather, the rules to generate them when needed are). Stations and BGS states would be well under a single gigabyte of data, especially if it was a completely static BGS.

If they don't already have a compile-time flag to point it at a local set of servers for development purposes I'd be very surprised.

That's not to say that I expect there to be an offline version released any time in the next several years, but I don't think the reasons they're not are going to be primarily technical ones.

I hate to be Uber-UnDoom here, but EDO is actually vastly improved (rendering, smoothness of gameplay, sound, er, immersiveness) since the upgrade.

When I finally got to load it, obviously.

Yeah, the only data that needs to be stored in any meaningful sense is the added data for stations etc, anything that isn't part of the proceduraly generated star system and planets. I till think it would be a lot of work to do and fdev won't bother doing it, but these days with multi-terrabyte storage capacity on home computers that's not an issue, it's giving the galaxy a sense of being alive that's the issue, nothing will happen without the background sim running.

As others have said, it's not going to happen (sadly). Might I offer you two alternatives? X4 Foundations is an amazing offline trading / combat / limited exploration spaceship game with a "BGS" that's far superior to Elite's. Space Engine is an amazing offline realistic exploration game (it actually now has game elements, finally) with a "Stellar Forge" that's far superior to Elite's. Both can be configured to feel like Elite in regards to controls and flight models, which is nice because that's what I'm used to.

Now if you're looking for amazing VR space combat that is equal or superior to Elite, then... Let's just say, "I still haven't found what I'm looking for."

Thanks. I am familiar with all these alternatives. I play Elite since ZX Spectrum version back in 90's. Looks like it is the end of a beutiful friendship.

Star Field looks promising.

I'm a bit confused - if you've been happily playing online Elite all this time, why is today suddenly the end for you?
Well... It gets boring. I got my Elite in exploration, Deadly in combat. I got my Vette engeneered. It was an illusory fun exploring undiscovered systems to have my name written on it.

I would get an offline version, crack it and purchase carrier to make some extra fun. No way I grind more credits for this. Or jump across Galaxy in a few hours.

I don't like Odyssey concept either. For 4.0 I have to upgrade my videocard and I am not sure that it is worth it.

No more fun.

Ahh, so you're interested in a moddable version where you can set a custom start, change income settings, etc. I definitely don't see that happening anytime soon, as much as I myself would enjoy such a version.
