Elite: Dangerous in the Rift is AWESOME!

It can't be described to someone who hasn't tried it, but playing ED in the Rift is awesome. You get a much better feel of the whole scale of objects - ships are HUGE compared to how they appear on a 2D screen. As do stations, planets, stats, everything. The DBOBE bobblehead appears to be about 18" - 24" tall inside my Python, whereas on a 2D screen it appeard to be about 6 inches tall.

Some of my favourite VR moments:

  • Coming into dock through the slot and looking out the side window to see all the detail in the station and FEEL like you're actually flying into a massive structure. Everything from the scale to the sound make you believe you are there.
  • Overheating in a dogfight and seeing the smoke rise in front of me, and wondering why I couldn't smell burning. Yes, it was that realistic that I expected to smell my seat melting.
  • Flying over a small moon with mountainous regions towards an Engineers base and feeling the ship bend and creak as it pitched and slowed.
  • Driving around in the SRV until I felt sick. Yes, a very bumpy landscape can make you lose your lunch, but its FAB!
  • Getting out of my pilot seat and having a look around the cockpit.

Apart from feeling a bit queasy barrel rolling in the ship and about to blow chunks in the SRV, I can highly recommend everyone at least try it out. VR is the future if this is what it's about. I'm buying shares in a bucket manufacturer right now! :)

Preaching to the choir, had my DK2 since june/july 2014 and there is no other way to play ED once you go VR imo.

I cant remember his name... does that poster who was naysaying VR and claiming the sony hmd which cost loads and was not VR was better still post here at all? (cant remember his user name).. I am not even sure if he had tried VR TBH but if so, just wondering what he makes of VR and if he will finally admit it is actually good.

Snap! I am only using a Rift DK2, but (unless it fails) I won't be going back to normal 2D gaming.

Same for me. I received my DK2 around the release of the 0.5 runtime, and have been playing E : D with it ever since. I had to play for a couple of hours in 2D a month or so ago and it was so incredibly underwhelming. I can max everything in "flat" mode, I have absolutely no aliasing (nor SDE, not that I notice that in the DK2 anyway) and the font is super crisp ... but it still doesn't compare to the pixelised, SDE'd mush *I AM IN* in VR.
I flew my Orca (in VR) through a canyon on a remote moon yesterday and it was glorious.

I hope the Vive issues will be resolved before I get mine, but if not ... then I'll still have my DK2 :D

Exactly! I have a nice 2D monitor which is 2560x1440 and looks gorgeous maxxed out in ED, but give me my lower-res, nausea inducing, teathered black box I strap to my face any day :D

I'm sure it's wonderful. I still have at least a month to wait for mine though. :(

If you've never tried VR before then you are in for one hell of a fantastic surprise! If you're also into driving games, then I can also highly recommend Project CARS. But ED is a completely different experience in VR, and one I think you will love :)

This might be old news to some, but not to put off those with a DK2 (and I flogged mine on eBay because of what I'd read), but it'll only work to the end of the year. Afterwards, apparently the runtime will be updated and it won't support the DK2 any longer. Makes sense commerically, but yeah not something I expected when I bought a DK2:

So, those with one may well have to get their CV1 pre-order initiated! Hopefully mine is coming the end of this month, but for me thankfully the Vive is doing admirably in the mean time!

VR really is a wonder, and it's so hard to convert people unless they try it themselves. ED really rocks.

normal flat monitors feels like going back to old school tube TV's now!

Yeah, first time i used my DK2 i was simply "WHAT THE ^&%$ !!!!!"

CV1 is an altogether more refined experience, you cannot do it justice with words.

That's a real shame for those who have DK2s, but I guess it had to come at some point :(

I think I'd compare it to going from green screen MUDs to playing DOOM for the first time on a PC. Back then DOOM was the first 3D non-wireframe game I'd played, and my jaw hit the floor the same way it did when I tried ED in VR for the first time :)

I think "WHAT THE ^&%$ !!!!!" should be printed on the CV1 box!

Be very careful when trying to describe the experience in real life as you will knock things off furniture from excessive arm waving and also unintentionally spit on people a little bit.
PS, station roll nausea becomes a thing of the past very quickly imo.

Welcome to the Stevie Wonder impersonator club.

Yeah. I don't care about the "Developer Kit" branding. The hardware performs perfectly well, and pulling the plug on the DK2 reminds me badly of Microsoft pushing Windows10 like it did. On the other hand, the DK2 should still work through SteamVR, and as long as there is a SteamVR "oculus legacy" driver at least Elite should work.

[*]Getting out of my pilot seat and having a look around the cockpit.
[/LIST]

I've been trying roomscale with the Rift. With about 10 feet range on the sensor I tried getting out of my seat and walking around the bridge too. Got far enough to touch the door to the bridge, looked around at the panels and stuff. Later I got into a dogfight, the glass windshield blewout, and I had 5 mins to get to a station. But the UI assistance for supercruise navigation was gone because it was on the windshield lol! So I had to stand up and look through the broken shards of glass in order to see the navigation UI while flying in supercruise like madman back to the station.

The coolest moment I've had is docking in one of the large stations, activating the debug camera, and making sure the height from the launchpad is exactly my sitting height. Then getting up out of my chair and walking around the launchpad. I spent about 15 minutes loitering behind my Type 7 and looking overhead periodically as the ships entered and left the station. It did feel strange not seeing any NPCs in space suits move cargo or whatever.

Wow you guys obviously are not describing the CV1 because it looks like crap. If you still have your DK2 keep it as that looks about 100% better when dialed in than this washed out mess you cannot do anything with.

I had a dk2 and now have a cv1.

You are mistaken. Perhaps your rift is faulty.

Every aspect of image quality is better in cv1 over dk2 IMO apart from godrays these are a step back but can be mitigated for the most part by devs.
Sorry you are unhappy with your purchase I am loving mine.
