Elite Dangerous is an acquired taste...like all delicacies

I played the original and the fan based homages to it. When I found out about ED I was incredibly hyped and also a tiny bit worried. Would the game match my memory of the original?

Its a tough curve, but I think, just maybe I have found what ED actually is. I have enough money to own a good ship, i've fought in a couple of real wars and i've explored a bit of the galaxy. But what has finally clicked is that there is this alternative universe that is alive and breathing, that I can affect. I literally dont know what will happen each time I undock and that feeling is awesome. What an incredible game and what awesome players. Thank you guys, I feel just like i did playing the original.

It is definitely an acquired taste, it sort of sneaks up on you.

I realized today that I have spent more time on my current exploration trip than I did playing entire campaigns in other games. Big ones too, like ACIV and DAI. It gets tedious at times, but I keep coming back for more scanning.

Not everyone gets Elite but this is nothing new really. It is the same now as it was in 84.

I wouldn't go down on record as saying this is a "simulator" because of obvious reasons but I wouldn't call this a "game" in the traditional sense either. When David and Ian created the original the alternatives were very linear and traditional games where you played from point A to B with a high score as the end goal. That suits MOST players but not all. Elite and ED are really for those who back then considered something like Paint to be a fun game and spent hours attempting to recreate in it whatever it is they had in their mind. The Cobra was the brush and the universe the canvas and that really confused a lot. Those who got it though stuck with it for life.

Now we live in the time of high speed instant gratification and people tend to really be that way with entertainment. For that I anticipate many will not get this game. Add that you really need to have a genuine interest for space to even consider it and it becomes evident where ED's challenge really lies.

Are the old guard players enough to keep it going? by the same token will it attract a new generation of fans? I think so. Elite is a technical masterpiece and a genuine labor of love, if anything that is and will be recognized as more people give it a shot.
