Elite Dangerous isn't Star Citizen, nor should it attempt to be...

The principles and features of Horizons was fine for me. I would have been happy with improved Graphics and Gameplay but personally didn't want a Star Citizen Clone.
ED excelled at what it did, now it doesn't!
I play Destiny for Run About Pew Pew, I was happy with my ED pretend Space Ship, realistic physics, Trading etc etc.
The Graphics were being worked upon and I bought into VR all because of ED.

What do I want?
I want Horizons (that worked fine in VR)
I want Trading and Exploring.
I want realistic Ship Experiences.
I want the FUN back.

I bought Odyssey because i've pre purchased all ED releases, not any more.
Give me what I want, i'll happily pay for it, i'll even pay more for it.
If I MUST have the Odyssey Upgrade, then let me ignore completely the walk about Pew Pew and Interaction. Let me continue to accept missions from my ship, don't offer me on-foot-missions I don't want any of them.

For me....Odyssey is a disaster in waiting, I'll stick to Horizons for as long as I an able.
Those of you that want Odyssey, good luck to you all, hope you get the product you deserve.

I sort of agree and disagree at the same time with this.

I think there should be 'on foot' gameplay.
I think there should be 'explorable' stations and ship interiors.

All of that stuff was promised or teased in the kickstarter and it's a big draw to be 'in' a space opera type environment.

BUT

Star Citizen sets out to be as bleeding edge as possible. It forgoes game design in favour of emergent systems. It overcomplicates. It physicalises everything beyond the point of practicality, or arguably, fun.

Elite could and should IMO have handled things much more like Freelancer did:

The hanger lift should have lead to different areas depending on what's in a station and what factions control it. Visit a shady black market in a dingy warehouse module. Visit a high end tourist bar. Pick up missions and appropriate stuff there, that tie into the SPACE part of the game.

Those social areas should be wrappers of a sort over the menus we're already presented - optional but there if you want them and skippable if you don't.

Give me the option NOT to engage on any walkabout and I'll happily agree with you.
With the caveat that hopefully (and I am the eternal optimist) performance issues and such are eventually resolved when the platforms are merged, you won’t have to engage in any foot-stuff if you don’t have to I’m sure, in much the same way that many elements of Horizons gameplay are optional depending on your choices.

Frontier should've sticked to it's guns and improove what it already does best and it current community values the most instead of trying to chase the casual pew pew crowd. Improving the space sim pilot experience by improving planets and adding some sort of ship interiors interaction and ALSO not messing with VR. That's where a lot of the frustration comes from, Horizons wasn't perfect by all means but at least it works for everyone.

Not so much if I don’t have to….I don’t want to, at all, ever!

Problem is, it looks like the current choice of startup (version) is going to be removed (merged) at this point it’s then no longer the product I want.

Another great reason for Frontier to get their act toguether and start listening to it's community for a change, they've had this great foundation lingering and neglected for years and a passionate community eager to support them if only they cared to listen and more importantly EXPLAIN us what's their overall vision. Cause this Odyssey update has left me a bit confused on what they are trying to go for.

I don't get it either anyone would think horizons is not available anymore?
odyssey is just a subgame dlc sold as a full game to maximize profits
the core game of elite will always be there with no need to ever leave your ship should you choose not too, the keyword here being Choice methinks...………...
one thing I don't understand is I know odyssey for technical limitations of consoles is not vr supported (console's = far more copies sold= dosh I get that)
but y the bordered cinema screen in odyssey when a fullscreen monitor replicant view is all that's really required
as that is the immersion killer more than the loss of simulated 3d imo

You haven't really been following how the two BGS systems are synchronised, have you?

Horizons 'will not' be available any more - eventually the two will merge from a technical standpoint, you just won't be able to get out of the seat (or land on atmo worlds).

no soz bgs I have no idea never have never cared too personally
if you are right and horizons is gone then indeed that is just pants
don't get that last part about not being able to get out of your seat? soz I am not to sharp can you elaborate.....

Dude, spacelegs and FPS has been one of the biggest omitted features they promised since Kickstarter. We have had concept art of it since 2013. This is just them continuing to deliver what they set out to do from the start. Heck, Braben confirmed in 2016, 2017 and 2018 that legs were a goal or even worked on. It has always been the biggest wiki page on a missing feature.

It's cool if you dont care for it, but it's weird to pretend nobody saw this coming or anything like it.

It will be very much like the rollup of Horizons into the base game.

The planet tech will roll in.
The economy stuff will roll in (EDO settlements affecting economy, same as Horizons).

These two are necessary in order to keep the (single) galaxy database sync'd for all players.

The holo-me / character customisation will likely also be unified. No point maintaining two systems for the same purpose - it leads to bugs (such as the red immovable shoulder decals in EDO right now).

The only difference will be that players who have purchased EDO will be able to disembark, and approach atmo planets.

Pretty much everything else will (and largely should be) common.

Horizons won't dissappear as a start up option. It will just get some of the improvements Oddesy brings.

If you are one of the canyon runners you may need to find new rocks to run in.

Hint: Option 2
I like making people happeh..

Objectively Star Citizen is a great game.
If E:D became like it, I would quit playing immediately though. It's WAY TOO "simulation" for my taste.
That and there is no PVE or private play option. It's, get trolled and griefed by players or don't play. So, I choose the latter.

Everyone should be able to Land on Atmosphere Planets, the choice then is do i disembark or do I remain on my ship!
If missions are only available by disembarking, then so much for the choice?
When FORCED to Play Odyssey, i'm looking to be able to select Ship ONLY Missions from My Ship, you can all play run around PewPew as much as you like my choices won't interfere in what you do.

If I cannot play the way I choose, then I suppose at that point there are other games.
