Elite Dangerous isn't Star Citizen, nor should it attempt to be...

They're Planning to REMOVE that Option, that's the point of the post.
It's more likely they do exactly as the picture states, but the "Horizons" option will be Odyssey without legs (i.e. you didn't buy it, so you get the tech, but not the "shiny") in exactly the way Horizons was with the base game.
That, at least, allows the bulk of the merging to happen with each option just a tick-box to allow the game to boot with the right settings rather than it dynamically knowing based on account history (with the current release/track record, it makes me itch thinking about how that'd go wrong).

Everyone should be able to Land on Atmosphere Planets, the choice then is do i disembark or do I remain on my ship!
If missions are only available by disembarking, then so much for the choice?
When FORCED to Play Odyssey, i'm looking to be able to select Ship ONLY Missions from My Ship, you can all play run around PewPew as much as you like my choices won't interfere in what you do.

If I cannot play the way I choose, then I suppose at that point there are other games.

Why should people who didn't pay for Odyssey get to land on Atmosphere planets? You didn't pay for them.

As evidenced by what? Where?

Er, it already works this way. You can only get ship missions while in your ship. You can only get on-foot missions by getting out of your ship and walking into the concourse to use a terminal there.

They are already completely separate.

The principles and features of Horizons was fine for me. I would have been happy with improved Graphics and Gameplay but personally didn't want a Star Citizen Clone.
ED excelled at what it did, now it doesn't!
I play Destiny for Run About Pew Pew, I was happy with my ED pretend Space Ship, realistic physics, Trading etc etc.
The Graphics were being worked upon and I bought into VR all because of ED.

What do I want?
I want Horizons (that worked fine in VR)
I want Trading and Exploring.
I want realistic Ship Experiences.
I want the FUN back.

I bought Odyssey because i've pre purchased all ED releases, not any more.
Give me what I want, i'll happily pay for it, i'll even pay more for it.
If I MUST have the Odyssey Upgrade, then let me ignore completely the walk about Pew Pew and Interaction. Let me continue to accept missions from my ship, don't offer me on-foot-missions I don't want any of them.

For me....Odyssey is a disaster in waiting, I'll stick to Horizons for as long as I an able.
Those of you that want Odyssey, good luck to you all, hope you get the product you deserve.

I kind of partly agree & partly disagree.

I like many things that have been changed in this update & the improved graphics are great.
Some changes took a bit of getting used to but I don't mind that, there are only 1 or 2 annoyances, like after repairing the ship, now when you go left (to buy limpets) the cursor jumps to the top of the list. And also after docking, you quickly hit refuel then submerge (go down) into the station then click services only to realize the cursor jumped and u just clicked Launch, its so annoying. Before you could quickly quit to main menu and go back in and your ship would still be docked but now that doesnt even prevent the accidental launch.

I have always wanted to be able to get out of the ship and walk around the stations, especially those stations with the huge hydroponics ring around them which sadly still can't be done. Every station seems to have the same internal layout which makes me not want to waste my time getting out for a walk.
I have NO interest what so ever in doing 'on foot' missions, I even skipped the new tutorial after 10 minutes or so.
I find surface prospecting a real drag now & I wish they didn't remove those crystal shard sites in HIP 36601.

So some good & bad,
Still enjoy playing it though even if im not playing the main feature of Odyssey

Not at all. personally, I purchased Elite Dangerous because of all the memories from the previous incarnations. I wanted to be Pilot and Master of my own little Trading Empire (actually enjoyed Exploring more) with emphasis on Ship, Real Galaxy, realistic physics and photo realistic imagery as technology advanced. I bought my first VR Rig and Oculus Headset to experience Elite in VR. Blow away with the immersion I was.

All I was looking for from updates was more improvements of the same and Living Updates to PowerPlay. I wanted to feel that one wee guy in a ship might or could make a difference in his adopted home system. Walk About PewPew was never on my Horizon, I had Destiny and Halo for that fix. Atmospheric Landings, Marvelous Planetary Vistas, Living Cities to fly over......that was the dream. I don't need to get out of my ship for that dream.

Nobody ever said that, and it's still possible to play the base game only. What they said was that they are planning to add the new planetary tech, graphics and so on to Horizons as well and make it possible to play with EDO and Horizons in the same instance. Currently, they're separated. They released a roadmap about this some time ago.

And let's not forget that whatever was in the kickstarter, atmospheric landings and space legs were the top features demanded by a rather large and vocal crowd here for a long time back then, and however the implementation may have turned out, we got what was demanded. I see no room to criticize FD for adding those features. One might even say they listened to the community here. They're optional anyway.

O7,
🙃

"I" want to be the hero (or bad guy) in my dream. Your ship becomes a prison.

Fascinating watching the new wave of ED defectors due to Odyssey experiencing that for the first time. Once you taste that freedom... and breaking those chains... there is no going back to the prison of your pilot seat.

Oh... I will be first to admit SC is far from perfect but the gameplay advancement is accelerating faster and faster with each quarterly update.

I think the 'Odyssey' debacle is a turning point for ED ... I hope it digs itself out such as NMS dis but the past arrogant gloating from fan boy ED Cmdrs suxh as your op statement is greatly amusing to us embracing the current status of Star Citizen.

I can only dream of what the gameplay will be in Star Citizen a year now.

Imagine how far along SC would be if SC abandoned their single player version (Squadron 42) years ago like ED did... forcing refunds from ED.

Elite: Dangerous abandons promised offline mode

There is also Squadron 42 (single player version of SC). Many ED fan boys forget that SC is effectively "divided in two" with this project. Imagine how far the persistent universe in SC would be if they abandoned Squadron 42 like ED did with their "Single Player Version."

It is a massive draw on resources. An entire studio (hundreds of Devs) in the UK are focused on it. Chris Roberts is moving to the UK this Fall to try and wrap up final production of Squadron 42 - Episode 1 for retail release by QTR 4 2022. Realistically... QTR 3 2023.

Once released, that will free up a small army of Devs to focus on major issues concerning the Persistent Universe such as Server Meshing and AI.
