Elite: Dangerous live stream from E3

I never saw worse stream session before. Why didn't they test anything before going live ? 40 % of the stream was them fixing audio which add the end broke completely...

Hah! Lol really?

Well, I suppose at least in that respect, it's an accurate representation of the state of the game. =p

- Ranking broken, not possible.
- Exploring, the rewards for that broken.
- Just using your ship, repairs costs currently insane, broken.

It's kinda hard to be sympathetic really.

Yep. Low bitrate (2000 max is NOT enough for a 1080p videofeed), off sync audio with crackles and background noise, moved to only 1 channel (left or right). 2 different mic`s with same effect.
Every single streamer can do a better job, specially given the budget that is used on equipment that i saw there...

When i see something like this, i stop supporting the developer right away. Because its not a strange and rare problem, its the lack of knowledge and 0 testing before going live. How can i trust a developer who ruins his streaming session from the biggest gamingevent worldwide right now?

The audio quality was abysmal.
I would have recorded a better audio with $5 Ebay mic.
WHAT THE HELL GUYS ?

Leave a piece of meat out and the vultures swoop in...predictable

Doing stuff live is hard, no matter how well prepared you are things go wrong. You could have thought of and planned for a million things, but overlooking one thing just takes it all down. Learn from mistakes and try again next time.

It is a damn shame they couldn't get it working right...this does look bad, don't get me wrong.

No if you are prepared and something is going wrong, you have a replacement.
If somebody is trying something with no idea how it works, its a different thing. 30 minutes with 2 mic`s, fiddling around and shutting it down in the end = worst stream on twitch in years.
Specially because they had expirienced people running around, at least 5 guys there know how to stream and how to use the hard-&software...

Hey, we aren't there...we can't assume what went wrong. Just trying to be a decent person and give them the benefit of the doubt. Lambasting Frontier for messing up their stream is just not necessary. Laugh at their mistakes? yeah, I'm good with that...but this kind of response is really just....yuck

Personally, I've done many live demos and training over the internet and almost every time it seems like I've got it all down pat...but then just one time...something...goes wrong and there isn't a damn thing you can do about it except say "I'm sorry, we are better than this, really"

We are talking about Frontier a company with hundredths of employees with millions of Euros budget STOP treating them like tiny indie group that never before had access to PC, if something is crap it needs to be fixed ASAP. But something like this is not even expect from small fan groups from a company of this size for THE most important event Frontier could get access to this stream should be done to perfection from the start with quality that would put average stream to shame.

I'm not treating them like an indie...these mistakes happen with huge companies pretty regularly...Microsoft is a great example.

No doubt, they bungled this and it should have been better. I'm not denying that. But for some posters to look at this, stamp their feet and act like they've never screwed something up themselves is just childish

Yeah but at events that big there is always a plan b and plan c ready. Everything is redundant.

I´m working as a DJ and i also stream and record videos. It can happen, but if you are prepared you fix it within minutes, replacing a broken piece of equipment if needed. Its the same thing here, its live. If my equipment dies, the whole floor/club will look at me. And if i cant fix it right away, i will never work again in this club, its that simple. Failsafe configuration and doublecheck before going live is the key to keep the show running :)

thebadnewsbaron was there being the host...professional streamer...does high quality streams all the time...from his well prepped home setup that is...

This was done from E3 as a quickly thrown together "why not" broadcast just before they let the press and public into the room for game demos...

That's very good of you, I'll look you up when I need a DJ. Yet, all plans fail. I'm not saying that Frontier didn't do enough or they did...I'm saying folks are conflating this with all the other legitimate problems with Elite. There are bigger fish to fry

Yeah sure, but not at the biggest event so far where Elite was shown, not when you have a well known streamer hosting the event.
In this case, you do a quick local recording, check all the hard&software offline and then you do a short stream to check the connection (on a second account so the main channel is not going online while testing). Takes 15-25min and saves you a lot of trouble. And streaming is really easy, i can set it up on any PC in 15min. If there are multiple cameras and microphones, it will take up to 30min WITH a short offline test.

Believe me, that was horrible and people watching it expect the best possible quality from an event like this.
People expect problems like this from a small streamer with no expirience, but not from a huge company at a huge event with so many people who can deliver the best possible quality.
Like i said, when i work somewhere and do something similar, it was my last day working there and i should be happy if i get a payment for the evening...

They are 8,000 miles from their home base, in a foreign country, working in an area with (let's be fair) saturated bandwidth from the 50 other companies doing their thing plus every attendee with an phone and laptop wanting WiFi access for their own video streams tossed into the mix. 2,000 was probably the best peak net connection they could get given that load. The price of a workstation is irrelevant if there is no usable Internet connection.

Anyone with the lightest smattering of IT experience feels empathy for techies in that environment.

Sure. Bandwith is a problem in some places.
But why did they use a 1080p resolution? With 2000 bandwith settings 720p 25FPS would be fine.
Heck even League of Legends LCS is in 720p just because it looks better compared to 1080p at low bandwith.

I'm saying folks are conflating this with all the other legitimate problems with Elite. There are bigger fish to fry

But they are all symptomatic of the same problem, a complete lack of useful communication from FD. They are more than willing to tell us things we don't care about or don't need to know, but can't answer simple questions about game mechanics or fixes of major bugs which have been present for months..
